petrolino Mike Nichols was an actor’s director which is why he always moved easily between film and stage. Though a German Jewish refugee, he was throughly American in his outlook. It’s legend that he added to Simon’s Odd Couple script here after Oscar reads a long grocery list from his facetious roommate Oscar says, “it took me five minutes to realize F. U. meant Felix Unger.” Mike Nichols also has a connection with cartoonist and playwright Jules Feiffer who wrote 'Carnal Knowledge' (1971). Nichols wrote the foreword for the book 'Out Of Line : The Art Of Jules Feiffer' (2015), published a few months after his death in 2014.
