Liked the first 2/3rds -- then it sort of dribbles away.
Same thing happened at another WW2 story directed by the same director (George Seaton):
36 HOURS with James Garner and Rod Taylor (great performance) and Eva Marie Saint -- terrific for 2/3rds, then sort of trails off.

Yes - engrossing but a little overlong at 2hrs 20 minutes. Holden is solid, Lillii Palmer a touching - and age appropriate - love interest. Good location work. Klaus kinski has eye catching bit part towards the finale.

Klaus kinski has eye catching bit part towards the finale. Hey, the guy with the cough, right? It's been many years since I've seen this good movie, but I can picture him now that you mentioned who it was.

I saw it but can't remember much. I had it confused with THE LIQUIDATOR which I had confused with THE DEFECTOR. I prefer TRIPLE CROSS.
