I've tried to tell you all several times that a dictionary is not a connection to reality, it is a set of labels for things you might (or might not) encounter in reality. You should never use dictionary definitions to argue for or against any properties found in reality. I've been doing this for years and never once used the label to prove the essence. Are encyclopedias also disconnected from "reality"? Is anything connected to this "reality"? Here's the first sentence of the Wikipedia article on Christianity: Christianity[note 1] is a Abrahamic monotheistic[1] religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, who serves as the focal point for the religion.I think you're probably smarter than that. Some things are not controversial. Whether something is a football or a baseball is not controversial. The dictionary definitions, the encyclopedias, all the literature and conversation, are clear which are footballs and which are baseballs. Some things are not so clear. Groups of people can be quite variously "defined" and even those definitions are ignored by various people. A precious few groups of people can be strictly defined. It should be easy to tell who is a doctor and who is not. Even there can be found some fuzzy edges, osteopaths, doctors of mathematics, and so on. "Christianity" is the most loosely defined of all groups of people. There are people who believe diametrically opposed things and they all call themselves Christians. (I mentioned this in the thread about opposite views.) The dictionary is utterly useless deciding who is a "Christian" and who isn't.

It is only useless to those who do not understand how to use language. It is a most useful tool as it gives you a starting point. Beyond that are nuances you are ill equipped to articulate.

You're getting the quotes mixed up, vomisa. Arlon didn't say that. You said that. And you've quoted cham as saying what Arlon said.

What Erjen said. 2. The software on this board is a nightmare. It is unpredictable. It loses things switching from "Preview" to "BBCode," It loses things I took several minutes to compose. It wanders around. 3. On issues related to what is in the dictionary, did you know that Salisbury "Steak" had chicken and pork in it? I happened to read the ingredients list on a TV Dinner and it had those in it. That is not what the dictionary says a Salisbury Steak is.

Lots of closed minded people in this thread, but that's to be expected. "Not sure" should be the default answer. There is a fantastic amount of mystery left in this world, and only rich Western materialists dismiss everything they don't know about first hand. I think there is at least ONE rather short sighted person here. The question didn't ask if anyone KNOWS that magic exists or that God exists. The question was do people BELIEVE it exists. It doesn't presume that anyone is "sure" of anything, nor do any of the answers.

"You can't just make up nonsense to try and prove a point."
There are plenty of extremists, often of White Supremacist idealogy, who will attest the Holocaust never happened, so uh no I'm not making anything up. That was just one example anyways, I noticed you said nothing about the antivaccers and Young Earthers. I get your not actually proposing magic is real, but the fact that I should at least be "open" to the idea is riddiculous for same the reason I'm not open to the idea of the Holocaust being a Hoax or vaccines causing autism.
Do you have any proof that vaccines don't cause autism? One does not need to prove a negative. So long as there is no proof that vaccines DO cause austism, there is no logic to the presumption that they do (anymore than the presumption that cherry coke causes malaria!

So once again you demonstrate your lack of communication skills. Are you aware that while the dictionary definition differs from what the mass produced food called Salisbury steak their tastes are very similar. Do you know what a starting point is? There is nothing wrong with the software on this site. You are experiencing is what called a PEBCAC error.

I don't like it, because it just showed you're a bit of a coward. I didn't report you when you were calling others "faggots" here, even though that was almost certainly against the rules. You're just a little bit of a coward, using the report function to try and censor what you don't like. Okay. If you want to think that, go ahead. Maya isn't bothering you, and you're one of the ones constantly following her around with utterly childish insults in an attempt to provoke, just as you did with Ada and certain other posters, and I'm getting very tired of seeing it on my screen all the time. There are people on the politics board you can hassle. You don't need to be bringing it here as well. If you can't handle a little criticism of the well known liar Molar, perhaps you should consider going to another board?

What you do isn't even good trolling. It's bad trolling. It's dull and horribly unimaginative. Fortunately it hasn't reached the point where I'm ready to bail out yet.

I am not, but I don't see how that matters. I only mentioned the ingredients to illustrate how the dictionary is sometimes ignored. I don't agree that it should be ignored where it is possible to apply it. Disputes over what the word "steak" might mean are an unfortuitous development. I'm sure I know what you meant and have no quarrel with your use of the term. Since you do not know what computer, operating system, browser, or internet service provider I'm using, that's a remarkable claim. Or perhaps just your bad attitude. This is not the only web site I use. I also use Reddit, several of my own web sites, several other miscellaneous sites, and only this one is any trouble. Go figure that.
