I think that's usually the case with lead actors in general. They obviously have to stand out and be watchable. But they also have to ground the series and bring out great performances from the other actors they work with. Will Smith does have great chemistry with a lot of actors he works with, I have to admit. But the Genie character as we know him was a total scene stealer. He didn't really *need* Aladdin and Jasmine to be hilarious. That was 100% Robin Williams.

What's interesting is that I liked the sitcom, but not for Will Smith. I found him to be mostly annoying. The supporting characters were much more funny and watchable. My favorite gag was when his friend was thrown out of the house. I just don't get how peope don't see him for the ONE NOTE actor he is. Last movie I saw on theater of him was MIIB, then Suicide Squad but not for him.

Realize that no one can replace Robin Williams as the Genie. If they have to remake all the Disney Classics into live-action, who would you prefer to see. Will Smith, honestly, might be able to pull it off (TBD). I think they have to think out of the box. I heard someone on a podcast wanting The Rock to be considered. I think that could possibly work as well. He pulled it off in Moana.
I also thought about Kevin Spacey taking over the role. He has done tremendous voice work/impressions in his career. He is also great a adlibbing. Just a thought
