In 1883, a small town newspaper, the Mandan Pioneer of Mandan, North Dakota, announced the discovery of two vast, prehistoric, cemeteries. That in itself wasn't all that interesting, but that these cemeteries supposedly held the bones of a race of giants got quite a bit of attention.
The Scientific American would pick up the story, and other papers would label one of the cemeteries "A City of the Dead." This first cemetery was said to cover over 100 acres in the present day Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park in North Dakota. The cemetery itself was placed near the junction of the Heart and Missouri Rivers.
The cemetery of a "dead nation" was discovered during an exploration of the area. A series of little holes were dug into several mounds, and it was determined that trenches had been filled with bones, and then buried.
Only brief excavations were done at the area, but it was a promising site for future study. But nothing seemed to have been done. In addition to bones though, pottery was also found, which appeared to be quite sophisticated.
A second cemetery was also mentioned, which was said to be five miles north of Bismarck, ND. Additional burials were said to have been at Crying Hill in Mandan, ND.
A reporter for the Mandan Pioneer would ask an aged American Indian about these cemeteries, and his answer was that his people didn't know about who was buried in these cemeteries. That they were there before any American Indian had come to the area.
Edit: To those saying it's a hoax:
I thought the same thing as well, but there are some oddities here. I'm not saying they are giants, but at each one of the locations, there were long lived settlements. The main one is On-A-Slant Village, which was home to the Mandans. Crying Hill was home to the Mandans, and before that, the Arikara. The one north of Bismarck is Double Ditch, also home to the Mandan.
So these were settled areas. Bones have been recorded at Double Ditch. But thorough excavations were never done at Crying Hill or On-A-Slant Village.
What really caught me though was the interview with the local American Indian who said whoever buried there was long before.

I noticed that your information doesn't mention, how tall these Giants are...
But I have heard about ancient stories and some recent digs, that talk about how they are tall enough, that "normal" sized people would be able to Walk under them, through their legs... That would put their height to be around 12 Feet tall... Twice as tall as what most humans are today...
I really don't understand why so many people are so against the idea of "Giants"...
Ancient cultures's talked about them...
So, What, did they all just make it up? And why would they do that?
But more importantly, we know for a FACT, that some people today can grow up to be NINE FEET tall... That's THREE feet taller than the average height of adults living today...
And with ancient stories describing 12 FT tall people... Well, that's just THREE more feet, than people in recent times... We're not talking about people 10 stories tall, or anything like that here... Just THREE more feet! OK, maybe FOUR. LOL!
Most likely, any TWELVE feet tall people walking around in ancient times, would have been considered different than everyone else, and probably would have been considered "Giants"...
So, Why is this possibility, considered "Impossible", by skeptics?
Does the laws of physics show that it is impossible, or something?
It's a shame that so many people can't accept the possibility, because TWELVE FEET tall people could explain so much about our ancient history...

There isn't a single reliable academic source I can find to support this claim.
It's made up.

If a mythical race of giants did exist, they did a remarkable job of making sure no evidence remained behind in the archaeological record. It's all just wishy thinking.
