I can't assess the needs of that community, but I agree it sounds like a serviceable trade. Also, I'm not familiar with Publix ... from their website, they seem to be concentrated in the U.S. Southeast.
However, per that trend, we've had two major chains close locations, which will be replaced ... at least, in part ... by the popular "Whole Foods." I think Whole Foods was founded in Texas, but it's now owned by Amazon/Jeff Bezos, so it should be everywhere, soon. I suppose there's good/bad in that, depending on how one looks at things. It used to be nicknamed "Whole Paycheck," because of the prices. After Amazon, the prices dropped considerably. And, from what I can see, the high quality of the inventory appears to have been preserved.
A huge Macy's store, in a major shopping center, closed about a year ago. The lower floor of that store, which has a large parking lot of its own, will open as a Whole Foods. Across town, a "Best Buy," closed, and Whole Foods is going in there, too.
Macy's, and Best Buy, are gigantic, and falling to online shopping/shipping, so a little trimming would seem to make sense. I'm sorry to see familiar chains close, altogether, though.

sears closed up in Canada years ago. The company preferred to pay its managers and its shareholders first before it paid its staff. They also took the money for the aforementioned groups from the staff pension fund. The staff was let go without anything. They have taken them to court to get their pension monies back.
Sears was always a lousy place to work with really bad morale. Staff really tried, but they used the "coco chanel" method of staffing: schedule all the staff you need, then remove a few. Could never find anyone, always long lines.

I have a Publix that's a 2 minute drive from my house, I absolutely love that store, There are several in the Mobile, Al. area. I thinks its headquartered in Florida and is employee owned. They have the best fresh produce, an excellent deli, a good bakery and a very good meat department and is well stocked with a variety of foods. All the Publix stores I have been in have been very clean and the employees seem very happy.

Sounds like a good trade to me!Depends. If you are hungry it might be a good trade: But if you need to mow your yard not so good a trade:

I was a contractor. The last contract I was assigned to was Sears. At the time of my retirement, there were over 2,400 Sears stores. Today, according to the news, there are 162 stores in existence nation wide. Very sad...

There's a Publix nearby my community. Love their cuban sandwiches! As for Sears, they closed one at my local mall last year. I never really shop there, but it feels kinda sad that it's gone. I'm so used to it being always there..
