Do you get funny looks when you tell people you don't drink ? Also, what do drink instead of alcohol ?
I used to get funny looks almost all the time. I mainly drink bottled water and fruit juice.

I drink the same plus hot tea. I don't think anyone is surprised that I don't, although a friend of mine would tell the waiter to put vodka in my drink when I was young

I DON'T. HATE the taste of alcohol. I DON'T know HOW anyone one can become an alcoholic (OR a drunk) with the NASTY taste it has. STINKS TOO!! I usually drink hot tea, diet cola (regular too sometimes) and water. Also hot cocoa and other non-alcoholic (NON-NASTY tasting) drinks as well , occasionally).

Part of the reason I don't drink is because I don't want a "beer belly". People forget that alcohol can make you fat and damage your liver.

That beer belly is BS if you keep your intake reasonable. like a few beers here and there is a non-issue. but those people who drinking plenty of it, those calories will add up.

A couple of my friends don’t drink and are still pretty sociable. In fact one of them is so sociable god knows what would happen if he did start drinking.

I mainly drink bottled water and fruit juice. yes on funny looks especialy when i was in my twenties. people will also make a lot of automatic assumptions - mormon/muslim - on antibiotics - pregnant - recovering alcoholic - doesnt like to go out/be sociable etc none of these apply to me. but “i was just never tempted to start” is not a “good enough” reason for people sometines . I usually drink unsweatened iced tea, seltzer water, or cramberry juice when at a party and feeling fancy. virgin mojitos if at a bar.

In my experience, most people seem to be fine with others not drinking. It's when you say you only want one drink, you get looks, comments, etc.

I just now noticed your signature, Fox. Are you as big a fan of the song/album Surf's Up as I am...or do you just like the look/sound of the words? Back on topic: I used to drink about one Margarita a year, and occasionally ( very occasionally), I would have vodka or gin disguised with lots of fruit juice for certain um, feminine complaints. But that was literally decades ago. People don't usually give me strange looks when I say I don't drink...which may be yet another advantage of reaching a Certain Age. I used to get much stranger looks when I said, "I can't eat/drink dairy products," but that seems to happen less often than it used to. Come to think of it, that may be yet another function of the advancing years. At least some people probably think, "Oh, the poor old soul can't handle dairy. Must be caused by her faltering digestive system."

Aside from an occasional toast, I don't drink alcohol at all. I don't go out of the way to tell people I'm a teetotaler since I don't think it's a particularly interesting fact about myself, but I'd be fine with people looking at me funny.

A good response for you to say is that you're going to live longer AND healthier. So don't be ashamed.
When I was in my late teens/early twenties I drank a lot of beer. Then I stopped altogether for the longest time. until recently when I started hanging out with a bunch of alcoholics. Now its all about the beer again.
But not anywhere near as much as when I was a kid. I'm one of those people that doesn't need it. Just around my new bunch of losers. LOL

I drank socially until my early 20s when I stopped. My friends were cool with me quitting, more for them. I have nothing against other people drinking as long as they don't behave like jackasses.
In the mid-1990s I started drinking only water. About once a year I have a Coke or some juice because they are too delicious. This year, for the first time in decades, I had a Dr. Pepper after reading that thread. It was great.

I'm a big fan of that song, album and The Beach Boys in general, in particular that early 1970s run ( Sunflower, Surf's Up, Carl and the Passions, Holland). I do also like the sound of the words though.
