Does anyone else prefer Martin Scorsese's early work to his later work? But earlier work I mean pre-1990. Mean Streets, Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy are my favorite films of his. I like how gritty and raw those films were. They felt like really grass root indie filmmaking. His later stuff is a little too polished; like he was trying too hard. Goodfellas was really a turning point for me. The rest of his films aren't bad (I particularly love The Departed). But many just don't have the same aura as his early work.

He's made some great movies in all the stages of his career, but I actually think he's become more consistent with his later work.

His early stuff is better than his later stuff, but he's still solid.

Honestly, I've always been a bit of a Marty outlier. Mean Streets is my fav, the only in my top 50 (#45).
I just don't love his more populist subject matter like Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, & even Raging Bull aren't quite in my lane. Very good movies, I just don't enjoy sitting through them.
I much prefer the likes of Kundun, The Aviator, & Casino. All greats.

post-1990 Scorsese easily wins overall.
the only pre-1990 Scorsese movie of any real worth in my book is The Color of Money (1986) which happens to be my #1 Scorsese movie straight up.
