There’s been a persistent meme for twenty years that needs dispelling this instant: these original trilogy only (mostly underlaid, misanthropic Gen-X) diehards aren’t “Star Wars fans,” at this point. Flat out. And their opinions shouldn’t be given an iota of reverence. I’m tired of hearing about how some smug fuck saw A New Hope six years before I was born and therefore has an inherently more valid opinion of the film than I do. It was fucking stupid back in the nineties and it’s beyond dumb now.
It feels good to be honest. Innit? Look, if your cranky old uncle or whomever says he liked the Steelers but only back when Bradshaw played (“the real Steelers!”) and that literally every team they’ve fielded since 1970-whatever has been blanket dogshit by virtue of its very existence, whether they went 4-12 or won the fucking Super Bowl, that dude isn’t a Steelers fan. He’s something else. Maybe, generously, “a huge fan of the old 70s Steelers,” or a fan of a certain point in his own life, but not a fan of the Steelers. And, thus, why lionize this old bastard? There have been like six television shows and over a dozen more movies since Return of the Jedi. If you’ve hated literally every single second of all of that, from the Ewoks to the prequels to the animated series all the way through the latest movie: (a) you’re not a fan of Star Wars, AND THAT’S FINE, and (b) you should maybe consider, like, finding something new to watch and discuss and sparing us your tired shit.
Good grief. The hipsterism, the smugness, the same fucking bullet points that were dispelled over a decade ago — it’s all genuinely embarrassing at this point. It has been since about 2006.
Tell me I’m wrong. You can’t.

I guess it's fairly obvious "OT only" fans are not fans of the franchise as it currently stands.

I’ve forgotten more about Star Wars than you’ll ever know, kid. Clearly you've forgotten what makes SW great since you like the sequels.

(That’s a Star Wars reference, but you’d have to have seen a Star Wars movie more recently than thirty-six years ago to get it. So, don’t worry about it.)

I guess it's fairly obvious "OT only" fans are not fans of the franchise as it currently stands. Isn’t it just a microcosm of the symptom though? You have trilogy/series/season purists in every fanbase. Star Wars, Game of Thrones, DC, Marvel, Star Trek... It’s just an element of fanbases. But it’s not the only element of controversy, contention, and divisiveness.

Tell me I’m wrong. You can’t. Poor baby. I got to love SW for...a decade before you cared (assuming you had to be at least 5 when you saw SW). My husband made a big deal he never saw Star Wars, was so proud of it. I insisted on seeing Empire. He became a fan. Loved it. Before you existed. Pffffft

The sequel trilogy is underwhelming and it all started with Abrams and his version of A New Hope. The Last Jedi I enjoyed bar certain obvious elements. The third was ok, a messy film. You can partially blame Rian but you may as well blame Abrams too for just leaving after ep 7...

Everyone knows ANH was far from original He was making something to harken back to the films he remembered loving in his youth. The old serials & such.

Lucas studied philosophy, mythology and religion and created his pulpy Star Wars universe out of it. JJ Abrams studied Lucas and rehashed him.

Everyone knows ANH was far from original He was making something to harken back to the films he remembered loving in his youth. The old serials & such. Star Wars was basically a return to Old Hollywood; The Searchers in Space. It's a flawed masterpiece of a film, the script is dreadful, and it's in no way groundbreaking in terms of acting or depth, but the presentation of ideas was what was original about it because audiences had never seen that type of visual effects/storytelling. The Force Awakens is also a wonderful film, a joyous return to Old Hollywood. Both films tell their story through the action and the characters and their journey is what is great about both films. I rate Star Wars and The Force Awakens very high. BTW, ignore these idiots who rave about "original" stories, gimmicky subplots and plot heavy nonsense. My Darling Clementine and The Searchers will always be better films than something "new" or "flashy" like Run Lola Run or Memento.

It's about star wars Honestly I thought this thread might get bigger for obvious reasons so I just kinda pre-empted lol. In saying that I agree, just because youre a diehard original trilogy fan or saw them during their cinematic release does not make you any kind of authority figure. The only person who can claim that is George Lucas but to a certain extent, obviously greater Legends and Disney star wars is another story

I'd like to see Abrams come up with something from scratch and develop it into a whole new world. Copying a classic is just so damn lazy and im honestly embarrassed that the TFA made so much money but what really made that money was nostalgia. It shouldve been called, Star Wars: The Nostalgia awakens. If the same movie was released a couple of years after ROTJ it wouldve bombed so hard

Anyone who makes the argument that because they saw ANH on release day has a more valid opinion than people who were unable to do it is an idiot.
That being said, of course OT fans that have issues with the sequels or the prequels for that matter are Star Wars fans if they consider themselves to be one. Saying they aren't is as valid as saying that someone who liked the sequel trilogy aren't fans.
