1. Red Herring Finally managed to use spoiler tags. Thanks for the tutorial and apologies for being a slow learner!

Nalkarj - Re names. Thanks for the heads-up. Sorry for the tardiness of reply. Had to install a new disc. Only just back on line.

Easy riddle, but I hadn’t heard it before and enjoyed it…
How’d he get to be such a good shot?

He shot, first ... then painted the targets around the arrows?

He shot, first ... then painted the targets around the arrows? Correctamundo! Good, fast work, divtal. Why he would have done this is beyond me—unless he knew the duke and his men were coming along at the time and was aiming for a position in the ducal court? One that I came up with recently, probably also easy: What did Johnny say?

Hmmm. "Mr. Keller, I'm the new Principal. Please see me, in my office." Johnny's transition from elementary school, to junior high, was not as a student. (?)

Unable to land the great coach, in initial negotiations, President Thurber bet $$$ on a losing season for Fairview. (?)

And a grand solution to that as well, divtal . (The Author! Author! problems aren’t riddles with a single solution, they’re general “insoluble problems” to which we then try to find rational answers.)

I just discovered this thread/category, yesterday. I've been a devoted "baker's dozen ite," going back to the old IMDb. Also, it would seem that a long-term passion for Sherlock Holmes has proven to have some worth.

Also, it would seem that a long-term passion for Sherlock Holmes has proven to have some worth. I suppose we’ll just have to provide you with some of our unsolved cases, then, hm? Here’s an Author! Author!-esque one that stumped us: Unfortunately, you’ve found us some time after we had lots of people on this thread, with riddles popping up all the time. We’ve exhausted many of the well-known ones—“man is running home,” “man rides into town on Friday,” etc.—but you’re more than welcome to provide your own!

I'm having a problem responding to the "A man's birthday is Dec. 15," post. I don't know why ... but, no one has ever confused me with a "techie." The man was a physician. Having completed his "residency," he was beginning his career as an obstetrician. (?)

I have a rare few minutes so I checked out your "easy" puzzles. Chivet Murder This one actually was easy, mostly. The odd spelling of the names made me think anagrams. I saw easily that Elli Kerth was "The Killer" and Tim Chivet was "The Victim." That was the solution, but there had to be more to it since all the names were odd. I translated Manny Torou as "Not Your Man" and then Renie Thother as "Not Her Either". Ned R. Hirger was harder, but I finally realized it was "Red Herring." That made Sir Roger A Hendal easier to solve as "Also a Red Herring." (Or "A Red Herring Also, if you prefer. Either one works.)

Great Archer Since the boy admitted he did not pound the arrows in, and you said the targets were painted, he simply fired the arrow into the tree and then painted the target around it.

What did Johnny Say? My first thought would be, pointing to the teacher, "That's my Dad you just did that in front of." You said his parents wouldn't be "going", but they could still be working there, but then why not assure him of that in the first place? So likely the teacher he "knew" was his uncle (or aunt, as long as she wouldn't put up with that kind of thing, either), or even his strapping older brother (or sister.) Whichever, he told Keller the teacher was related to him and he was probably on his way to detention - or Gitmo, if it was his crazy cousin Luther, the CIA plant. I could have done this all on one post, but I want to get my post total up more.

Correct on the first two, brimfin; there’s a more riddle-y solution to the third, but excellent work all-round!
