I guess that's not surprising, I doubt they want a Last Airbender situation.
TEXT:
During a recent New York Film Academy Guest Speaker event, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige discussed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and revealed that 98% of the cast will be Asian. During a Q&A, an attendee asked what the process is when deciding which characters to show in the MCU. Feige stated that the choice of characters can vary. He said, "Like Shang-Chi, we’ve wanted to make that movie for a long time. We want to make a movie with a 98% Asian cast." This checks out, as Marvel has had a Shang-Chi movie in development since even before it acquired the movie rights to the first Iron Man.

Like the Ancient One in Doctor Strange? Something tells me that if the Ancient One was kept as an Asian character, you'd be complaining about them being an insensitive racial stereotype.

That's good to know. I was watching The Witcher recently and was a bit irked by all the racial bending despite the series originally being based off a medieval Polish setting. Glad to know that they're not doing it with Shang Chi. The MCU already kinda did it with Thor and Dr. Strange.

Like the Ancient One in Doctor Strange? In the case of the Ancient One, that was done because they didn’t want to piss off the Chinese government by casting a Tibetan actor/actress. The character in Shangi-Chi are all supposed to be Chinese, so that wouldn’t be a problem.

Cast someone with ambiguous Asian ethnicity. What you shouldn't do is whitewash the character.

let people focus on the movie's quality's first. Feige is making himself look bad by bringing race to it.

Sounds like a weak excuse. They didn't want to anger the Chinese by casting a Tibetan actor so they cast a caucasian actress instead? Like that's any less infuriating.

So no black bridge guards then?
Seems like they are falling behind in their diversity messages. Not as enthusiastic about spreading it in China as they are in Europe (I think Tibet was a throwaway since China sees it as their land, so the fact that they made the spiritual leader a white woman means nothing to China, it is an insult to Tibetans not them).

Casting Idris Elba for Heimdall and Tessa Thompson for Valkyrie. I mean... why? I actually love both of those actors but the casting just didn't make sense. Heimdall is one of the whitest Asgardians and is known for his red hair... then they cast Idris. It's not even a huge part, why spend money casting Elba when a relative unknown who looked like the character would have made much more sense. As for Valkyrie... if I remember correctly, during the casting auditions for Thor the minimum height requirement was (I believe) 6'2" for the Thor role and 5'9" for the Sif role. So how and why did we end up with 5'4" Tess Thompson playing this character:

If they look different in the comics then it's different. The casting makes sense to me. Maybe it would make less sense if I knew what they looked like outside the movies, but then again I wasn't bothered by Samuel L Jackson as Fury and I knew he was white.
Can't say it's an issue for me but I see what you're saying.
So that's what Valkyrie looks like? Jesus, what a babe!

Nick Fury was black in the Ultimate Avengers. In fact if I remember correctly the artist specifically patterned him after SLJ. So casting him for the role was the perfect choice. I'm not that averse to racial bending a character if the casting choice makes sense. Like when they cast Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin, sure he was the wrong race but his size, voice and overall intimidation factor was all spot-on, so it made sense. But nothing about casting Elba and Thompson made sense. Especially Tessa Thompson. Not only was she the wrong color, she was also the wrong height, size, muscularity and bearing for the role. She even looked younger than Hemsworth even though according to the movie she should have been around twice his age if not moreso. Don't get me wrong, I admire Tessa Thompson. But couldn't they have cast her as Wasp or Maria Hill instead?

Casting a Chinese actor for Ancient One would’ve caused a much bigger outcry given the political situation. The character also has some controversy about him supposedly being an Asian stereotype, so this was really a lose-lose situation.

Branagh casted Denzel Washington for Don Pedro in ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ - in 1993.
