Looking annoyed by the topic, Watts said Prowse was angry about not being told ahead of time George Lucas wasn't planning to use Prowse's voice as Darth Vader. Prowse didn't find out they used another actor until he was in the theater watching Episode 4 for the first time and heard James Earl Jones' voice come out of the suit. Prowse was obviously put off by this. Yeah but this is kind of crazy since Prowse rarely talked in any movie and is covered head to toe! He didnt in A Clockwork Orange or Frankenstein films. He said he wanted to be Superman but come on..
You can hear his voice in one of the documentaries on Star Wars and he sounded awful. They had to replace him to avoid it being a comedy.

I think the ending to Planet of the Apes would have been a big shocker.
Troy McClure: "I hate every ape I see from chimpanA to chimpanZ you'll never make a monkey out of me."
Statue of Liberty
Troy McClure: "Omigod I was wrong, it was Earth all along, you finally made a monkey"
Ape chorus: "Yes we finally made a monkey,"
Troy McClure: "Finally made a monkey out of me. I love Dr. Zaius."

I agree. His voice didn't fit the role of Darth Vader at all. It may have been nice to let him know his voice wouldn't be used in the movie though. Although Prowse should understand that no actor in Episode 4 in a mask/makeup got to use their own voice other than Anthony Daniels. George Lucas hadn't even planned to use Daniels' voice until they tried out other voice actors and realized Daniels was the best voice for the role. I hear Ray Park was disappointed his voice wasn't used for Darth Maul - so much so that when he was offered the role of Toad in X-men, he only did so on the stipulation his own voice would be used for the character.

It was a different world before the internet. The news would leak to hardcore fans, but wouldn't spread like wildfire. The twist still surprised plenty of viewers. It wasn’t released until several months after the US release where I was living. It had spread by then and I had the story lp even before seeing the film. In my experience, all the novelizations were released before the films until Disney took over....

including the Star Wars franchise itself, can ever compare to the one in The Empire Strikes Back. That really was like an emotional, intellectual, and psychological kick in the teeth and punch in the gut. Everything else is like, meh. Nah. The biggest twist ever is "You maniacs! You blew it up!"

Maybe they should have told David Prowse that they used audio technology to alter his voice and make it sound more dramatic, heavy, and evil, and made it seem like James Earl Jones being the actual voice was a rumor or urban legend. Then everything would have been fine.

In my experience, all the novelizations were released before the films until Disney took over.... So it is just all bogus insider politics and the revelation was no big deal anyway. Those that hadn’t heard beforehand, could, or could not, have cared that much anyway. It wasn’t like the secrets to universe were being revealed. No, not really. Yeah the novelization may have been released a month before the movie. But you have to consider the era in which this occurred. Only avid fans rushed out and bought it. And out of their ranks, only the most hard-nosed fans would’ve read that entire novelization in less than a month! Add to that the fact that there was no internet and/or social media. Anyone who found this out would’ve had to pass this on by word of mouth. So it was never widely circulated by any means. On top of that, they likely encountered some disbelief. No doubt some people who actually did hear of it figured such a shocking twist was a prank fake rumor. I can guarantee you 80% - 90% of viewers were shocked by the twist.

Then everything would have been fine. This would have worked at first. At his own request, Jones went uncredited for the voice of Vader at first. He thought his participation in the movie would ruin his career. It wasn't until the movie was a huge success and got re-released back into theaters, that he got his name attached to the movie.
