On August 27, 1991, at about 1:13 am, Marsa Gibson and her boyfriend, Stanley Hamby, were traveling westbound on Interstate 70. They were headed to Terre Haute, Indiana, to pick up Marsa’s two young children. Marsa was driving, Stanley was riding next to her in the front seat of her car.
As they traveled underneath the Manhattan road underpass at mile marker 33 in Putnam county, two large rocks (exceeding 20 lbs. each) broke through their windshield.
Marsa was able to successfully stop the car before passing away from her injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene, her COD blunt force trauma to the chest and head.
Stanley survived with minor injuries.
The rocks were visibly thrown from the overpass above, where at least two people were observed by Stanley.
This was not an isolated incident, as similar incidents had occurred from the Manhattan overpass and other nearby overpasses during prior months, 8 in total.
None of the previous incidents caused death or serious bodily injury, but all incidents involved heavy “rocks” being thrown from overpasses by a small group of people.
The occurrences ceased after Marsa’s death.
One witness claims he saw two men in a pickup truck steal a large rock from his yard and drive away earlier the same day Marsa was killed. The pickup truck matched the description given by another witness at a separate incident involving rocks being tossed from an overpass nearby.
Police believe they know who is responsible for her death, but they have never named any suspects. They claim that a small group of then 19-23 year olds, frequently caused trouble around the area. They were known to get drunk and steal and vandalize things around town, and were often seen “hanging out” on the overpasses.
Years later, a member of the same group police believe are responsible, did an interview with a newspaper. He claimed while he had participated regularly in throwing things from bridges and overpasses with the group, he wasn’t there the night Marsa was killed and says he doesn’t know who did it.
Apparently after interviewing all of the friends in this group, only two people didn’t have alibis for the night in question. These two men are investigators main “persons of interest,” but police aren’t ruling anyone in the group out.
They are hoping that as the years go on, and friendships fade, someone who was there that night, or knows who threw the rocks, will come forward.
A wooden cross is hung in the spot Marsa died as a memorial. Marsa’s father, who maintains the small memorial to his daughter, said that at some point someone carved a smaller cross into the large one. He believes they did it out of guilt, for knowing who threw the rocks.
Marsa left behind two daughters who were 9 and 10 years old when their mother was killed.
Marsa’s mother recently passed away without ever finding out who is responsible for her daughters death.
Her father, sister, and daughters, hold onto hope that one day someone will be held accountable for their actions that night, and Marsa will finally get the justice she deserves.
