It continues! Last decade's winner was apparently John Aniston with runner-up Eric Martsolf. John's always been tricky because he's been on recurring status since 1999 but in the 2000s (and early part of this decade) that was semantics. He was in essence a contract cast member in terms of how regularly we saw him. It sort of caused Best Recurring Actor to become an unfair runaway win for him. So I guess I was accounting for that by including him with the Supporting Actors. This decade, though, I'm not doing that. John's age and health has caused him to actually sort of appear with the frequency of a Doug or Julie and Recurring feels like a better fit for him.
Here were the winners of Best Supporting Actor this decade.
2010: John Aniston (Runner-Up: Joseph Mascolo)
2011: Chandler Massey (Runner-Up: Jay Johnson)
2012: Bryan Dattilo/Freddie Smith/Joseph Mascolo (Runner-Up: James Reynolds)
2013: Casey Moss (Runner-Up: Freddie Smith)
2014: Casey Moss and Freddie Smith (Runner-Up: Drake Hogestyn)
2015: Freddie Smith (Runner-Up: James Read)
2016: John-Paul Lavoisier (Runner-Up: Greg Vaughan)
2018: Stephen Nichols (Runner-Up: Lamon Archey)
2019: Lamon Archey (Runner-Up: Greg Rikaart)
Supporting Actors an odd mix. You have people like Josh Taylor and James Reynolds who were there the whole time but always function as supporting. You have people like Peter Reckell and Matthew Ashford who are lead actors when they're around, but they just weren't around much in the 2010s. Let's see how we land.
Some notes on people who weren't nominated
Bryan Dattilo - this was a tough one. He was on contract from 2012-2013, and he has appeared a lot more than some of the people we're considering supporting. But ultimately he just seemed to make more sense as a Recurring Actor. Ditto Wally Kurth, James Read, Paul Telfer, Brandon Beemer.
Vincent Irizzary and John-Paul Lavoisier - I went back and forth on this one too. These two were actually never on recurring. But they were super short-term contract cast members where they came on the show in a big way, were important for a while, and then quickly gone. In that way, they really functioned more as big guest stars who had come on for an arc. Ultimately, it was about keeping both categories roughly even in nominees.
A. Martinez, Mark Hapka, Patrick Muldoon, Jordi Vilasuso, Kyler Pettis, James Lastovic - I don't know what to tell you. They're not nominated anywhere. Had to draw the line somewhere. There was a lot of turnover this decade! Come at me Dario and Nathan fans!
