So, to make this manageable, this is just people who left who have remained gone (besides guest appearances or whatever). Matt Ashford's firing in 2012 was the last straw that made me stop watching for years.... but he did come back in 2018, so he's not on this list.
Speaking of Matthew Ashford, he was the runner-up last decade for his 2006 departure. The winner? Melissa Reeves for the same 2006 departure.
This decade's winners
2010: Frances Reid (Runner-Up: Bryan Dattilo) 2011: Jay Johnson (Runner-Up: Crystal Chappell) 2012: Peter Reckell (Runner-Up: Matthew Ashford) (Matt is not eligible as he is currently on the show) 2013: Eileen Davidson (Runner-Up: Casey Deidrick/Nadia Bjorlin) 2014: James Scott/Eileen Davidson (Runner-Up: Alison Sweeney) 2015: Freddie Smith (Runner-Up: Peter Reckell) (Freddie is not eligible as he is currently on the show) 2016: John-Paul Lavoisier (Runner-Up: Kate Mansi) (Kate is not eligible as she is currently on the show) 2018: Bryan Dattilo/Stephen Nichols (Runner-Up: Thaao Penghlis) (Stephen is not eligible as he is not currently on the show, I'm also deeming Thaao as currently on the show as I think he's still on recurring status and we're supposed to see him soon) 2019: Nadia Bjorlin (Runner-Up: Judi Evans)

This one was hard. There was a lot of people I wanted to vote for. But ultimately I voted for permanence.
Frances Reid is freaking Frances Reid. She was Alice Horton! Her loss is beyond compare and was absolutely the saddest departure of this decade, right at the top. (I've never been a Stefano or Caroline fan, but I'd understand voting for Joe Mascolo or Peggy McCay for this reason.)
My other votes went to Peter Reckell and Renee Jones, both of whom had hugely important characters that died as well. Losing Bo is gigantic, and Lexie was also a total stalwart of this series.
Am I sad that Bryan or Jay or Alison aren't on the show anymore? Sure. But I literally saw all 3 of them in the last year. Lucas, Philip and Sami are alive. They're fine. They'll show up. For me this is Alice, Bo and Lexie.

Bump. Vote for these please. I know we don't have a lot of posters anymore, but we have more than this!

I had to vote for Lucas/Bryan - even though his character may still be alive, the show cannot seem to do right by him. It's been years it seems since they last knew what the hell to do with him. I mean, Jesus, Lucas and fucking Adrienne?? Allison leaving the show certainly didn't do him any favors either, but they haven't known what to do with him for a long time before that. And it's not even just one departure, I don't know for sure what the last decade was like for him and all the dates of everything, but I'm fairly certain he's been on and off the show multiple times between 2010 and now.
I mean, I know Lucas is literally the bastard step-child on the show, but Christ, they don't have to treat Bryan like he is....

I voted for Frances, Renee and Peter as well. I was totally shocked when Renee left the show. I met her on one of my flights from JFK to LAX back in 2000. I got to spend hours talking to her. What a wonderful person. Afterwards, she sent me a cast photo with autographs from the majority of the cast, including Frances Reid. I will always treasure this photo. Renee, in person, is just like Lexie. I could tell what a genuinely nice person she is. The one thing that just surprised me when she left is that she told me that Days was her home and she never planned on leaving. She said she would stay as long as they would have her. I just always wondered what changed her mind and leave Hollywood behind for good? Maybe I will never know. But, this is the reason she remains my favorite Days star and character for always.

What a fantastic story!!! I love that. I always liked Renee as well but I really didn't like the way they handled Lexie's betrayals and just swept them under the rug. That's not a reflection on Renee, but it made me not like the character much after that.

I really think the show suffers greatly without Bo, and Hope is just a mess without him.
I agree she should have been written off when Bo died. Her pairing with Daniel Cosgrove's character was so promising and then that went south. The stuff with Nighttime Hope, her with Rafe, and now this Gina BS are just unwatchable.

I'll admit, I nearly voted for Aiden and Hope in the couples thread. I wasn't watching for a good portion of it, but during the time I was watching, when most of it looked good, until they decided to flush it down the toilet. What really annoyed me was when they teed up an opportunity to retcon Aiden back into the picture as a good guy and squandered it by still making him a weasel who was hired solely to betray Hope. That was fucking stupid. Why take the time and effort necessary to bring Aiden back the way they did, just to rehash the same conclusion? It was even worse by virtue of the fact that they actually managed to have chemistry together. Bo and Hope were a hard enough act to follow. If you can actually find someone new that could work, why blow that up? Twice??

I just realized no one voted for Alison/Sami...

I just realized no one voted for Alison/Sami... I mean... yeah, I would like her back on the show more regularly, but there are a lot of other departures that I think hit the show harder; or like with Bryan, that the show hasn't made the best possible use of them.

As much as I was sick of Sami and EJ, I really think the show is suffering without them, and without Bo and Lucas.
But if I had to pick only two, I'd definitely rather have Lucas and Bo back than EJ and Sami.

I think both Sami and EJ brought something to the table, but I just don't think it was their sparkling sexual chemistry. Both the characters and their actors were dynamic enough to bring a charge almost any story written for them; and I'd argue that the stories that brought them together were perhaps what dragged both of them down. And I don't just say that because I despised the pairing. EJ/James was at his best when playing a complete and utter bastard; and rarely when they tried making him sympathetic or anything less than an antagonist did EJ come off sincere. And man, now that I'm thinking about it, I do miss James Scott being on the show.
And as for Sami - Sami just never seemed like Sami when she was with EJ. She usually seemed more like some sort of pale imitation of Sami; this wilting flower of a character. I still maintain that the best story there would be for Sami to come to grips with the reality that her relationship with EJ had lead to her developing some form of PTSD or Stockholm Syndrome or something along those lines; where she had become so emotionally conditioned in regards to EJ, that even after his death she clings to the idea that he's coming back at any moment and that she needs to be "his Samanatha".
