I just caught up with Monday's episode and I've read some of the spoilers going into Tuesday's episode.
This is exactly why the time jump was a dumb idea, not because the premise was bad, but the writers for this show are bad at their jobs and wouldn't know how to use a good idea if you paid them; and based on the quality of writing, I can only assume that the writers are all in fact deranged monkeys who write scripts in exchange for bananas.
What is the point of a fucking time jump if you have to do these sort of expositional jumps back to show how everything played out?
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore This is Us, who uses the fluid storytelling framework perfectly. They know how to tease a story out and actually show us what we need to know, when we need to know, without spoon feeding us every plot detail. They also don't need to rely only something as clumsy as having all of the major plot threads comes to ahead at the same fucking time; they are capable of having multiple concurrent stories in the air and manage to juggle them and give a healthy and diverse cast their due in significantly less air time than Days has.
So now, because this show doesn't know any other way of telling a cohesive story than to just blurt it out, we're going to have a week of nothing but flashback to fill in the gaps of the major developments of the last year; and it's dumb. We're going to see the culmination of Adrienne's death, Haley's death, the stupidest possible background on the supposed death of Kristen's baby and the supposed birth of Sarah's baby, which in fact will turn out to be Kristen and Brady's baby, because why not? It's all going to be laid out this week, two months after the time jump, all lumped into 5 consecutive episodes; which leaves what afterwards? There will be no other time jump mysteries or details to explore after this. And you can't really count Ben's incarceration and who really killed Jordan, because a) it's clearly whats-his-name who's making time with Sonny; and b) it doesn't really count as part of the time jump, because the death occurred before that happened and the only thing that came out of the time jump related to it was the revelation that Ben had been in prison this whole time. Even if you do want to include waiting for the formal reveal of the Jordan's real killer, that's it, there'll be no other consequences of the time jump that the audience will still need to be caught up on; nothing else apparently happened in the preceding 10 months that the audience doesn't know about, at least so far as any of the characters or writers have indicated.
I probably watched Monday's episode in record time, I skipped about every other minute; there wasn't anything vital divulged that I could glean. It seems weird that they decided to make this flashback about Mothers day, but didn't feel like holding it off until closer to Mothers Day; or maybe set it sometimes closer, like Valentines Day. I suppose the writers figured that it would be better not to have the flashbacks track too precisely to one year ago, but considering they opted to make it a great big clusterfuck of a flashback where so much of this shit all went down on the same day; I don't think it would have mattered if it closer to being exactly a year ago.
I honestly had to think about why Bonnie would be going into work on a Sunday, but I'll concede that at least some papers especially daily papers, would probably need at least some staff coming in every day. But even so, how did Adrienne manage to overlook that she'd be working on Mother's Day? And how did neither Sonny, Will or Justin think to check if she might work before making plans?
They really laid on thick the foreshadowing of Adrienne's impending death.
Not sure the point of showing a flashback of Sara snipping at Xander. Maybe there'll be context later, but it just seems out of place given the more recent, present day episodes that showed her warming to him.
