I'm nearly 15 minutes into this episode and the only thing that's happened that's surprised me is the shot of Victor stepping off the elevator and walking off screen.
I was like, holy shit, did they just show Victor walking? And I say that with all due and sincere respect for John Aniston, who is a treasure of an actor and time is a contemptible bastard and it's going to suck hard when he's gone, but I can't remember the last time he was in a scene where he wasn't sitting down. Rather than crack a joke about Days blowing their budget on CGI or some sort of elaborate John Aniston puppet, I'm just going to say well done. I don't know exactly what his health is like these days and hope that it's good enough for him to still be with us and part of this show for a long time to come. And whether that shot required some special planning (I did notice they shot it from a low angle, perhaps to hide a walker) it was still perhaps one of their best, if albeit brief cinematic achievements. Those few seconds felt like I was seeing the vital Victor who was a force to be reckoned with.
(Although, having mentioned a John Aniston puppet, I can't help but wonder about the possibility of giving Victor the baby Yoda treatment.... I.... I would watch that....)
With that said, I'm now to the part of Will telling JJ what happened; and I'll admit, it took me a minute to remember that Adrienne is JJ's aunt.
I know this would be a difficult time for anyone in this sort of situation, but Justin and Sonny know they can turn the lights on to see Adrienne and say goodbye, right? I get that it wouldn't exactly set the mood, but it kind of seems weird.
So they don't actually know who's responsible for the crash - Will assumes he is, Xander and Victor assume Maggie was; and so far they haven't given us anything to establish why either of them might think so, let alone lend credence to either assumption, apart from their involvement and the fact that both were doing something stupid while driving.
Oh, well, Sarah said she saw a black car, at night, and Will's car is gray; that settles it.... 🙄
Damn. I will say this, their use of John Aniston in this particular flashback almost makes all of the rest of the bullshit worth it. Almost. I love seeing him up and about.
I'll give them this as well, Freddy clearly didn't hold back when breaking down saying goodbye. It was most a well done scene; some of the dialog is just what it is, but especially the earlier use of the flashbacks to Justin and Adrienne's past was well done.
But on the other hand, in large part by virtue of how they have framed this whole narrative by show us how it all plays out first and know that a less than a year later Justin and Kayla are together, it does feel a little awkward watching Kayla comfort Justin while he grieves for Adrienne.
(Sigh) and then they tried to double down with all the baby bullshit.....(Sigh)....
Seriously, I've said it before and I'll say it again, this whole..... everything should be summarized and used for literary courses and lectures on tv and film writing as the textbook example of a cluster fuck. It's too much. It's too stupid. It's one thing for Xander to have spent the better part of the last year posing as the father of Sarah's baby so Eric doesn't know it's his; it's stupid, but it's such basic soap stupidity that it's not even a blip on the radar. To pretend to be the father of the baby he's pretending is Sarah's cranks that sucker up to 11 on the pure fucking stupidest idea this show has concocted to date.
I assume Victor and Xander bought off the doctor who pronounced Sarah's baby dead, right? Right now I'm just at the part where Kristen pushes Haley down the step - which was the cherry on top of this turd sundae. I can kind of appreciate their attempt to make it look more realistic by using a real stairwell, but the blatantly obvious difference between the cinematography of the hallway outside the stairwell versus in the stairwell makes the whole thing dissonant. The stuff in the stairwell looks like it was shot on someone's phone - but not even a good phone, like a phone from 5 years ago or something.
And for a woman who just had a baby and gave the impression of a difficult and exceptionally painful birth, Kristen was certainly spry and leaped out of that hospital bed and followed Hayley without much effort.
Seriously, this show is fucking serialized; do they really need to end each of these stupid ass flashbacks with "to be continued"?? Hasn't that been the fucking premise this show has been built upon for the last 54 years?
On a side note, I do kind of feel the need to apologize if I've offend any of the regulars here with some of my stronger choices of language of late. This site is a bit more permissive, at least unofficially than the old Days board; and I've gotten used to being a bit looser with dropping the f bomb in my rantings reviews of the Arroweverse shows - those guys can give Days a run for their money when it comes to bad writing.
So far no one here has objected, but I can pull it back if people would prefer.
