I've never seen a film quite like this before and I had never even heard of it before today, takes place in a castle surrounded by an eerie fog in the Pacific NW, which serves an asylum for military men who are 'insane' (or presumed to be), as a psychiatrist (superbly played by Stacy Keach) arrives to cure them, or determine if any are faking, it has several lol comedic moments but then some surprisingly shocking and thought-provoking, covering some very deep topics, this is a extraordinarily literate film (written and directed by William Peter Blatty of The Exorcist fame) with a stellar cast and extraordinary direction, I was so impressed that I looked to see if was nominated for any awards and it did win a Golden Globe for Blatty (best screenplay) and the film was nominated for best picture drama and Scott Wilson a very well deserved nomination for best supporting actor, not a surprise the Oscars didn't offer it a single nomination, the production is minimal (this is not film boasting a massive budget but does not suffer in spite of that), has a minimal effective score, great cast of what appears to be mostly character actors, I was able to watch it for free on Tubi, I'm giving it a 9/10 but I am sure this is a film that demands more than a single viewing, I'd like to buy the blu ray and the original novel by Blatty.

One of the great barroom fights in cinematic history.

Builds up interestingly despite the weirdness and the bar scene is really intense.
