Without understanding anything of the actual physics that may be involved, I would nonetheless have to say I think the idea of mankind ever creating such a machine is highly doubtful. I'd be far less surprised to see us develop warp drive than time travel.
How can one travel to a moment in time that no longer exists because it has already come and gone? Or forward to a time which does not yet exist?
It's a bit like parallel universes - an enthralling science fiction concept, but with no appreciable basis in reality.

There already is one. Kind've. But it only goes forward in time, not backwards, and we don't have the technology just yet. But here goes...
If a spaceship reaches near light-speed its moving so fast that its practically going forward in time. While inside the ship you might have travelled only months, back on Earth centuries would have passed. So in essence, time machine.
They know this to be true theoretically speaking, but like I said, the tech aint there yet. We 'd still have to get a space ship that could travel that fast. LOL

A 2014 film which documents the invention of the first time machine. That's the thing. If someone went back and changed everything we wouldn't even notice because the changed time line would be our real time line. That's the rub of time travel.

As for folks saying that they know there is no such thing because "where are the time travelers? Where are they?", well.. I would imagine that anyone in the future who had that power would be very careful with it. EXTREMELY so, what with the ability to create paradoxes and mess EVERYTHING up. It would be kind've like Star Trek's Prime Directive, their foremost rule so as to not mess anything up. That would answer how we don't see them.
Another theory is this: Who says we haven't seen them? They probably look like ordinary people and they would make sure dress and behave like we do. Again, Star Trek! lol

If time travel to the past were possible, we would mostly likely know it.Would We? Every single time, someone has claimed to have come from the future, they are labelled as wackos, and their stories are labelled as hoaxes... UFOs, Ancient Aliens, Bigfoot, ETC... It's always the same. Same thing for OopArt (Out-Of-Place Artifacts)... A hammer found inside coal which formed millions of years ago? Nano-Tech buried in the ground for hundreds of Years? Men riding on Dinosaurs?... Hoax! If something doesn't fit into our indoctrinated beliefs, that was established by "experts" a 100 years ago... Then it didn't happen, and it's just a hoax! And so, what if, a real time traveler were to suddenly appear, tomorrow... Do you really think that anyone would believe it, or would they, again, just label it as a hoax? For some weird reason, As a society, we are somehow conditioned to believe that these things, DON'T happen... when it reality, Aliens COULD very well land on the White House lawn at any time... And historians could very travel back in time, just to see how much of a loser president, TRUMP really was... But, I truly believe that most people, still won't believe it... People want photos of UFOs? We have such photos, but people still label them as BS! I truly feel sorry for anyone who will be put in charge of disclosing similar kinds of information to the public, in such a way, that even the stubborn die hard skeptics will believe it. We went to the Moon, 50 years ago, and people STILL don't believe THAT!... And that isn't even one of those "Para-Normal" type topics. LOL! I don't know if we will ever be able to build a Time "Machine"... But, Who knows what kind of Knowledge that humans will have, even just 125 years from now... Just 117 years ago, most people thought humans would never be able to fly "Like A bird", and look at where we are now... 1,000 years from now? I can't even imagine, as to what humans will be capable of.

They DID break the rules all the time in Star Trek, because in fiction you set up a rule in order to have your characters break it. The worst thing that can happen has to happen or else you have no conflict. That's drama.
But IRL the captain sends you to the brig for the rest of your life and ruins your entire military career. Depending on how bad you effed they might just sentence you to death!

I can't even imagine, as to what humans will be capable of. Exactly. If we haven't killed ourselves in that time, I would imagine that our technology will be like magic! Look at the advancement of technology in the last 100 years alone! We can talk and see someone in real time who is on the other side of the planet! We couldn't even do that 20 years ago! Cars and airplanes!? We'll be able to travel via the power of our thoughts!
We just don't have the understanding to come up with time travel right now. Yet. Imagine trying to explain the internet to someone that lived 100 years ago. You couldn't. But its real.

Speaking of time travel I've just been watching an old sci-fi show from the seventies, the TV version of Logan's Run, pretty good for its time but as cheesy as a hill made of cheddar, and there was an episode that dealt with time travel that I thought interesting. In case anyone isn't aware of the premise it's set 300 years in the future following a nuclear holocaust in the 22nd century, in this episode Logan and co come across a time traveller who travelled from just before the war to find out what happened to escalate the situation and try and prevent it. At the end of the episode after he returns to his own time he sends a message forward in time to let Logan know that the war was caused by his time travelling explaining that after it was revealed that he had successfully travelled through time some countries became fearful that time travel would be weaponised and that precipitated a nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union.

Yes that's right, if somewhere a super secret government program exists that somehow secretly invented time travel. We'll only know if they decide to go public and demonstrate it. Unless time travel hasn't already been invented, we will never see visitors from the future or past. My guess is, it hasn't been invented yet.
