Years ago an AI wrote a romance novel that could not be distinguished from one written by humans in blind tests.

I don't believe that the software wrote the entire thing without input or direction from human beings. Human beings can't write novels without input or direction from human beings, either, so there is no rational basis for suddenly raising the bar in the case of AI. The "input" or "direction" consisted of its being fed thousands of romance novel texts, analyzing the patterns, and then using an algorithm to write one itself based on the data it had absorbed. If I remember correctly, the type of novels fed to the AI consisted of those short, lower quality, highly trope-filled Regency romances, so the basis was not as sophisticated as what you get from a best selling author. I'm sure that was an intentional handicap, but it is only a matter of time. . .
