I remember the deaths of JFK, RFK and MLK. But I was pretty young, so I don't think it affected me as much. The one that was most shocking to me was on January 28, 1986 when the Challenger broke apart at 1500 mph (at the time it was thought to have exploded). America had never lost anyone to an in-flight accident and in a few moments, the whole crew of 7 was gone on live tv. The popular high school teacher, Christa McAuliffe, chosen from 11,000 applicants, had long trained for that mission. Her children and her students were watching from school that day and her parents were in the audience at Cape Canaveral. Yes, I remember when that happened. I was in Gr. 8.

Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter. The global outpouring of grief was unreal. Few celebrity deaths in my lifetime have been as huge as that. It was like everyone in the world had simultaneously lost a loved one.

I think that the outpouring of grief for Princess Diana was far greater than for Steve Irwin or Michael Jackson, etc.

I barely knew of Princess Diana when she died, as I was 8 years old in 1997. But I'd seen a lot of Steve Irwin thanks to his show, his movie, appearances on talk shows and in magazines etc. I was on IMDb back in 2006 and almost every single board across the entire site had threads about his passing. Millions of Americans grieved for him. It was across news sites. I could go on and on... Like I said, few celebrity deaths in my lifetime have been as huge as that. Yes that includes Princess Diana and Michael Jackson.
