Lol. I never got why people get so upset about this plot point.
And the backstory isn't needed to understand the movie. All that matters is the lost lightsaber was found somehow. That's all that's needed to understand the movie.

I just need to remember that with Star Wars, if it didn't happen in live action, it didn't happen. Comics and books mean nothing.

It was caught in a ventilation shaft at the bottom of Cloud City and a maintenance droid found it. A supervisor of the smelting core kept it until Vader discovered he had it and confiscated the saber with the hand. Later Palps took it from Vader.

...Disney just needs to face the fact that they are not going to do any better than the EU that was approved by George Lucas, though much of it is poorly written, the basic outlines were usually solid at least. It's clearly time to reinstate most of the classic SW EU.
