......memorable bad boys, or bad girls on film ?? For instance, Fred MacMurray playing the despicable "Jeff Sheldrake" in The Apartment (1960).......an especially memorable one, given the incredibly wholesome "Steve Douglas" role of My Three Sons (1960-1972), that he would undertake shortly after the release of this movie.....and one which would forever cement his "good guy" image in most people's minds! SAVE FERRIS

Not a fan of MacMurray in his comedy or western roles, but he had been a superb "baddie" in three major movies before "the Apartment", so it should not have come as a surprise to anyone: Weak, rather than truly evil in Double Indemnity (1944) dir: Billy Wilder A bent cop in the little-known but excellent film noir Pushover (1954) dir: Richard Quine The slimy and treacherous Lt Tom Keefer in The Caine Mutiny (1954) dir: Edward Dmytryk I may be unaware of others, but on my present knowledge he should have stuck to those sorts of films. It has just occurred to me that it was the superficial charm and apparent good-nature which made him a "family favorite" which enabled him to get away with his dirty work (for a while) as an evil-doer.

Gregory Peck as Dr Mengele in the Boys From Brazil. He seemed to be having a good time with it.

The usually amiably bumbling Bill Nighy as an SS officer and the bad brother in Hitler's S.S.: Portrait in Evil (1985). To be fair, it came early in his career and was a role he would probably have turned down once he became a name.

The obvious one is Henry Fonda in Once Upon A Time In The West, but maybe that's depicted in a couple images that aren't showing up for me.
Burt Lancaster in The Sweet Smell of Success, Judgment At Nuremberg, and Elmer Gantry. There might be several others so maybe he's not a good example.

Gene Kelly _ Inherit the WindCynical reporter E. K. Hornbeck says things like: " I do hateful things for which people love me, and I do loveable things for which they hate me. I'm admired for my detestability. Now don't worry, little Eva. I may be rancid butter, but I'm on your side of the bread " and Townswoman : You're the stranger, ain'tcha? Are you looking for a nice, clean place to stay? E. K. Hornbeck : Madam, I had a nice clean place to stay... and I left it, to come here.

Donna Reed and Shirley Jones became famous in nice girl roles... then both played hookers and won Oscars.
Matthew McConaughey spent 15 years as a romantic foil in dim romcoms... then showed his mettle as a redneck (the Oscar win) and a critically applauded psycho (KILLER JOE)
