at the end of Daytona 500. The cage that protects the driver's head was caved in and the car was on fire with him trapped in it. He was taken to Halifax Medical Center. Live stream, waiting for press: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcaaS20H3Gw

Such a scary crash. Hamlin has come out and said he didn't know how serious the wreck was while he was celebrating. That's probably true. But it looked to me like his team knew. Their behavior was by far the strangest. Ever see someone try to act really happy while really uncomfortable at the same time? It looked to me like his team chose to run out and celebrate, knowing full well shit was fucked. And if they did know, that's messed up. I'm glad to hear Newman's injuries are not life threatening. I was concerned because they were being super vague on the broadcast and it looked like the commentator guys might have been crying.

Yeah, the whole thing was awful and then weird on top of it because of Hamlin and his team. The bad news, that I learned from the livestream at Sports Wars, is that at Daytona they held up black screens around the crash when they extricated Newman from the wreckage. Privacy seems like a no-brainer, but a ton of NASCAR die-hards on there were saying that the use of the screens is very unusual. The implication of that combined with the status of his condition as "serious" is that he could have a broken back/neck, be paralyzed, have brain damage/a head injury, any number of horrible consequences of the crash that in and of themselves, right now, will not end his life. I hope it's not anything nearly as bad as any of those, but that's what they were saying on Sports Wars were some of the worst possibilities.

You're right. This could still be very bad. I don't watch much NASCAR so I don't know how, when, or why they stop a race, but it seems to me like this kind of crash should be a reason.

It happened car lengths short of the finish line. If I'm not mistaken, Newman literally came in fourth in the Daytona 500 as his wrecked car crossed the line. It's horrible. ETA: The other 尺ロㄈにモイ州凡几 was just telling me about all the epic padding they started protecting drivers with after Dale Earnhardt's death, so maybe Newman's head and spine are okay. I hope so! I didn't mean to alarm you, onethreetwo.
