Just to shake things up a little, I thought I'd start a thread on Dark Shadows.
For the uninitiated, Dark Shadows ran every weekday on ABC TV, first at 3:30 EST and then at 4:00 (to accommodate the new soap, One Life to Live). It told of the Collins family living in Collinsport, located on the wind-swept cliffs of eastern Maine. Not only does the Collins clan own most of Collinsport, their ancestral mansion--Collinwood--sits atop a majestic hill. The family manse is ruled over by Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (movie great, Joan Bennett), and through its doors walk many a supernatural creature. The most famous, of course, was vampire Barnabas Collins, played by an inspired Jonathan Frid.
Who here watched the soap? And are you still a fan today?

Was and still am a fan. My brother and I still can't believe our mother let us watch it. We were way too young and we were scared witless everyday but couldn't wait until the next day's episode. I still have my Dark Shadows trading cards, LP soundtrack, board games (2) and View Master set. Am I a freak? Yes. But 60's TV was the best.

I also still have the LP (received for Christmas in 1969) and the gum cards (green set). At one point, we even went to the studio and ended up just standing outside and freezing our asses off! But we did see Nancy Barrett, Joan Bennett, Grayson Hall, Jonathan Frid, Geoffrey Scott and Chris Pennock show up that day. Something I've never forgotten.

Loved that show!! And imagine: Joan Bennett and Grayson Hall, two highly respected actresses from NYC? Working locally in the neighborhood! What a hoot!

I didn't get to watch DS in the very early days, pre-Barnabas. But in reruns I did catch the Laura Collins story and enjoyed it very much. Diana Millay is a great actress.

I saw several episodes back to back one day that the Decades network was airing a Dark Shadows marathon. Is Elizabeth the character who once said she spent 18 years without leaving Collinwood? (I suppose she had agoraphobia?)

(I suppose she had agoraphobia?) Yes, she's the character who was a recluse, but not because of agoraphobia. 18 years earlier, she and her husband, Paul, got into a heated argument, and she struck him on the head with a blunt object. The only witness was their mutual friend, Jason McGuire. Jason looked Paul over and pronounced him dead. They both placed him in a box and buried him in the basement. Elizabeth wore the key to the secret room around her neck and never left the house, for fear the body might be discovered. 18 years later, Jason returned to Collinwood and began blackmailing her. Ironically, Paul returned to the show later on, and he was played by Dennis Patrick. The same actor who'd portrayed Jason McGuire!

What's your favorite plot line on Dark Shadows? I absolutely loved the resurrection of Barnabas, followed by his kidnapping of Maggie Evans, falling out with Dr. Hoffman, and the truly spectacular time trip back to 1795. Fascinating!

I loved at the begining the shock of finding out Barnabas was a vampire. Also the relationship Barnabas and Willie had, kind of love/hate and their dependency on each other. Loved too how Julia had a big crush on Barnabas. Also the original first back in time when Angelique first came on and we got to see how Barnabas became a vampire.

I hated the Adam storyline. Not even the Leviathan arc was as bad as that one.

I haven't seen the show since it aired. Two story arcs stand out in my memory. I remember when, for some reason, Barnabas got really old and Dr. Hoffman was trying to cure him. I had a trading card with Old Barnabas on it and it scared me so much that I kept it in a drawer away from the other cards. Also, I remember an arc where characters kept having these dreams where they were opening doors that had scary things behind them like guillotines and gravestones. Each time a character would have the dream they'd open all the doors in the previous dreams and then one more. Does anyone remember this? Also, I loved the secret doors and passages. Especially the one in the mausoleum where you turned the ring and the wall would open. I think Barnabas' coffin was in there.

Actually, you pulled on the ring of the lion's mouth. Barn's coffin was in there most of the time, yes.

Especially the one in the mausoleum where you turned the ring and the wall would open. I think Barnabas' coffin was in there. That dream arc was Angelique's "dream curse," designed to turn Barnabas back into a vampire. One person would have the dream, be brought to a mist-filled room, surrounded by doors. There would be no walls, just the doors. They'd hear a cryptic rhyme and then are compelled to open each door. Inside is something totally horrifying (sometimes, downright laughable, actually). Then, after the dreamer wakes up screaming (no one on DS just woke up, they bolted upright and screamed), they're compelled to tell someone else the dream. Then THAT person has the dream, etc. In the end, Barnabas is the last to have the dream, with disastrous results. The "Barnabas turning old" storyline happened about a year before the dream curse. Dr. Hoffman is trying to cure him of his vampirism through a series of injections. They're working, so he wants to hurry the procedure. It ends up turning him into his real age: 175!

i remember watching "Dark Shadows" when it appeared on the Sci-Fi channel. I really enjoyed it. Too bad the powers-that-be ruined a great cable channel by getting rid of all the good things I liked about science fiction and fantasy.
