I prefer to listen to the surrounding 'noise'. We can get enough isolation at our homes, why would we want more when we are out?

I tend to listen to stuff more when I’m out and about but if I want to concentrate on the surroundings my ears go naked. I’ve had a soundtrack in my head since 1983.

I can get the appeal of tuning out the sounds of the surrounding world but it's safer to keep your ears open incase anything happens.

When I was younger I used to walk around a lot with my headphones on, but I was a lot more obsessed with music back then constantly discovering new songs and bands. Sadly music does not have the same effect on me anymore. My reflexes used to be better too. There is a lot of traffic where I live and even without headphones on you often can't even hear these new e-rollers coming. I've been almost knocked over a few times by them.

Some of (actually, a LOT of) the piped in music I'm hearing nowadays at stores, malls, and other public places really sucks. And often they play it too loud. Some of it literally gives me headaches. I *wish* I had some sort of music-playing device with the headphones and all that, but TBH, I think the best thing to do out in public now is just wear ear plugs.
