“A general belief seems to prevail in the Colony that the Indians are little better, if at all, than savages or the Natives of Africa. Even the children are taught to believe in that manner, with the result that the Indian is being dragged down to the position of a raw Kaffir [derogatory term used to describe black people in South Africa].” “In the face, too, of financial operations, the success of which many of their detractors would envy, one fails to understand the agitation which would place the operators in the same category as the half-heathen Native and confine him to Locations, and subject him to the harsher laws by which the Transvaal Kaffir [derogatory term used to describe black people in South Africa] is governed.” “So far as the feeling has been expressed, it is to degrade the Indian to the position of the Kaffir [derogatory term used to describe black people in South Africa] .” “Ours is one continual struggle against a degradation sought to be inflicted upon us by the Europeans, who desire to degrade us to the level of the raw Kaffir [derogatory term used to describe black people in South Africa] whose occupation is hunting, and whose sole ambition is to collect a certain number of cattle to buy a wife with and, then, pass his life in indolence and nakedness.” “Your Petitioner has seen the Location intended to be used by the Indians. It would place them, who are undoubtedly infinitely superior to the Kaffirs [derogatory term used to describe black people in South Africa], in close proximity to the latter.” “The Boer Government insulted the Indians by classing them with the Kaffirs [derogatory term used to describe black people in South Africa].” face2faceafrica.com/article/6-quotes-that-will-convince-black-people-not-to-celebrate-gandhiSo would you consider these things Gandhi wrote as racist ? And yes these are actual quotes by Gandhi. No. The first quote he was saying kids SHOULDN'T be raised to believe their race is better. He was using Kaffir in the ironic sense to make a point. You have to factor in culture and time period. Silly goose.

It doesn't surprise me that Gandhi was racist. Every culture is racist. Africans are racist, Indians are racist, Asians are racist, Europeans are racist, and slavery was part of all those cultures for centuries.

Yeah, but who cares? You're talking about someone who DIED 72 years ago. He was born 151 years ago, for Christ's sake. The Civil War ended 4 years before he was born. You can't judge people like that by modern morals and ethics.

To paraphrase Bob Dylan, "everybody gets slurred, but what did you do?" To quote King's X, "it's gonna be alright."

To quote King's X, "it's gonna be alright."Well that's a relief. Indeed. So, this Gandhi thing. I've never heard the word "Kaffirs." Was it considered a racial slur when he said it? Maybe another KX quote fits here: "There was a black flag on everything around me and I was walking backwards again."

Place it in historical context. Gandhi lived and worked in South Africa during his early adult life. The country was segregated and he first championed the civil rights of his own people, the Indians. You can't apply today's racial standards to people who lived over a century ago. Funny how this does not seem to apply to white people who loved in the same era.

If you don't know the answer, just say so. Jeez.

Funny how this does not seem to apply to white people who loved in the same era. I do. Most historians do. Abraham Lincoln is often cited as a racist and rightfully so. He believed African-Americans were inferior to whites. Yet, the man ended slavery in the U.S. He was a great man regardless. Racism as long as it doesn't involve arbitrary hate is not the worst human emotion. Racism isn't an emotion.

If you don't know the answer, just say so. Jeez. I have no idea what you're talking about. Could you ask me a direct question I can answer, please? Happy to... I've never heard the word "Kaffirs." Was it considered a racial slur when Gandhi said it?

Happy to... I've never heard the word "Kaffirs." Was it considered a racial slur when he said it? I have no idea. Sorry. Maybe you can find the answer on google. I was hoping to find the answer here. On this discussion board. In a discussion about Gandhi's possible racism. Ideally, the OP would clarify for the poll. After that, perhaps a nice chat about whether or not simply saying "racist slurs" makes one a racist, or if context matters. Oh well. I tried. Guess I'll go search Google for a place to watch Lethal Weapon 2.

I'm feeling quite anxious and agitated now. Like I'm not responding the way that's expected of me, might incur penalties from administration, and God I wish I hadn't flippently replied to a topic I know nothing about.
Again, sorry, don't see why this needs to become an issue when I'd like to remove myself from this conversation. Sorry./
I might be able to put your mind at ease if I knew what I said that made you this way.

Because than you would have to admit that you are a hypocrite. You never asked me a question. That was my first and until now only post in this thread. Kudos for calling me a hypocrite for not answering a question you never asked me while not answering a question I did ask you. That's Inception-levels of irony.
