Another thing I should've mentioned in my OP is that they do deserve a lot of credit for going with practical effects. They may not all look great and I may not love all of the designs but I do prefer real costumes and animatronics/puppets to CGI most of the time. And it's not just for nostalgic reasons I do honestly think that real physical creations come through the screen in a tangible way and wish more studios would take the time, effort and money to use them. In a way I feel sort of guilty criticizing the alien designs when practical effects was at top of my sequel trilogy wish list. I think the best results come from a blend of both, tbh. Practical effects with CGI to clean up the wires and smooth things out. I've long thought the late-80s/early-90s saw a nexus of practical and digital effects work that was, in many ways, a lot better than what followed it. Like I think effects in Jurassic Park ("one," if you will) and Terminator 2 look better than those series' respective sequels, save for maybe Jurassic World.

It's actually sort of amazing how much better the effects in Jurassic Park 1 are even compared to most of today's effects heavy movies. To use a Star Wars example I think the effects of Phantom Menace are still jaw droppingly amazing and crush 95% of all visual FX movies in the last 18 years. Even some of TFA's CGI looks bad in comparison (Trench run on Starkiller base is a great example of this). I can't help but think that studios just don't always care if things look good as long as the movie makes money. They don't find it necessary to invest in the FX and probably see them as a way to cut costs. I think the time when FX were an art are long gone unfortunately. That's just one more reason I think movies from the pre digital age are vastly superior.
