Why aren't you a fan of RS? I was thinking it would be a good investment in case of travel, because it's set up to give you a working knowledge? I mentioned this before, but I'd to learn sone Arabic for work. I wouldn't expect to become fluent. I'd like to learn Spanish as well.

I only have experience with their computer ran education and I simply dont think thats worht money. BUT if under 300 they include conversations with live person who is a native speaker then yes that would make me consider it also. Is that the case, are live conversations included? for unlimited languages/sessions? I am now learning ASL and bits of Spanish, but would also like to pick up Arabic or Japanese or German eventually. Spanish you can learn on your own I really believe it, its one of the simpler languages to pick up.

I took French and Spanish up to grade 13. I actually took the OAC (Ontario Academic Credit) for both of these in grade 12. One has to take and pass 6 OACs to be considered for University.
Then, when I got to University, I took Introduction to Spanish - my 1st year bird course. At the time, there was no pre-requisite. After I went thru the course, they put the restriction on it that those who had taken OAC Spanish would not be able to take the class.
I took Introduction to Russian in my 3rd year. There was a 2nd year Russian class. I did sign up to take it. However, only 2 other people had signed up for it. So, they didn't offer it.
I can get by in speaking and reading French and Spanish. Listening - is another story.
I only remember a few basic phrases in Russian. I use them on the hockey players on the local team to see their reaction.

Hindi, English, Urdu and Magahi.
But I will like to point out that Hindi and Urdu are not much different. The main difference is that Hindi has a lot more Sanskrit derived words and Urdu borrows words from Persian and Arabic. But the base of Urdu language is still Sanskrit and main words are Sanskrit derived. But being a language of Muslims it borrows a lot from Persian and Arabic.

But Urdu is written with the Arabic alphabet, isn’t it? Can you read and write in Urdu as well? Never heard of Magahi. Since you didn’t say that it is similar to Hindi and Urdu, does that mean it’s a Dravidian language (or not part of the Indo-European family)?

I speak English, French, Portuguese and Spanish pretty well, and I can understand and make myself understood in Italian. I learned German for a few years but not having practiced much, at this point my remaining knowledge of it would only be enough to carry a VERY basic conversation.
Twenty years ago I would have jumped at this opportunity in order to try to teach myself Japanese. Now I am no longer motivated enough for that.

French is my native and everyday life language.
English is second and I can understand a bit of spanish, enough to order a meal at a restaurant but not enough to hold a full conversation.

Since you didn’t say that it is similar to Hindi and Urdu, does that mean it’s a Dravidian language (or not part of the Indo-European family)? Yes, Urdu is written in non-Devanagari (Hindi's) script. Urdu's script is mainly Persian with some influence of Arabic. It is written from right to left. I cannot read or write Urdu in Urdu's scrip but I can speak fluent Urdu. Had a Pakistani flatmate when I lived in Melbourne and a few Pakistani friends when I was in UK and I never ever did face any problem in understanding Urdu spoken by them. Many Indians would understand simple Urdu but I can understand and even speak fairly difficult Urdu. I don't know how to make you understand what is Magahi. No, it is not a Dravidian language. It's a sort of village people's language. But still spoken by over 20 million people. Magadhi Prakrit was the language spoken by Buddha. It was less educated people's language. From that developed Magahi. Now in Bollywood age, people across north India are learning standardised Hindi and in fact English so I think Magahi is getting less and less used. In fact most of the upper middle class in India now speaks in English. So even Hindi might be less used in later days but Magahi certainly so. I was born in the ancient city of Gaya, where Gautama Buddha gained his enlightenment. It is the holiest place of Buddhism.

Temporarily, my Spanish was passable. Now it's all but forgotten. Four years down the drain.
