I love "Predator 2." I may be slightly nostalgic about it, but it was such a bizarre movie that was sort of unapolagetically schlocky. It seemed like it was trying to be a bit like a Paul Verhoeven movie, but was ultimately more like "Robocop 2" than "Robocop."
-The 'whoosh' of Danny Glover swinging his gun -Everyone is comically sweaty (I know Los Angeles is hot, but the sweat was over the top) -It turned the lore up to 11, and sort of removed some of the mystery of the original movie, but in some unexpected ways. I thought the cowboy's gun was a nice touch. -The subway scene is pretty interesting and stands out as an interesting setting to put the Predator in. -Gary Busey never disappoints.
"The Predator" was a big disappointment for me. The humor didn't land at all, despite having a lot of actors I usually tend to enjoy. The effects weren't bad, but it just felt like "AVP: Requiem" all over again. The dogs were an interesting addition though, and it wasn't bad to look at, it just felt like putting the shoe on the wrong foot.
"Predators" was the low point for me. Adrian Brody, who's someone I always look forward to seeing, was just sort of miscast and doing that Christian Bale growl...he lacked believability to me (though I respect the man for bulking up that much). I typically like Robert Rodriguez's stuff, but this one seemed to lack grounding. Nobody felt like a real person. Laurence Fishburne nailed it though.
"Predator" is one that I thought did well as a standalone. The more you start to 'open the kimono,' the more you realize the mystery was part of the allure. Plus, I feel bad for anyone who has to follow Schwarzeneggar in a role like the predator's opponent. Though I enjoy the lore, I think "Predator" was sort of lightning in a jar and didn't really benefit from the sequels.
