The original is the only really good one. Scream 2 is okayish.

I voted for Scream 4, it being such a vast improvement on the previous two films and a rare example of a belated sequel that actually matched the quality of the original movie.

Scream 2 took some unexpected turns and had some of the saddest deaths of the series, Randy and Maureen. Both killers were equally disturbing.

I wasn’t really surprised by Scream 2 (which is kinda ironic, as it had a pretty convoluted backstory compared to the first one, which I was surprised by), but I’m also tempted to give it my vote here just because that scene in the car in which Sidney has to climb out past Ghostface is so good. Beautifully-done Hitchcockian suspense. EDIT: And the scene with Randy’s death, which I also saw coming but which was also very well-done. OK, yeah, for pure filmmaking it’s probably my favorite. But the first one was a cleverer plot.

Lebowskidoo 🦞, I edited my first post, and after some thinking about it I think I actually like it better than the first too. You’re absolutely right about their making it a worthy sequel; it’s its own thing, not some kind of afterthought or addendum to the first. One of the things I like about the Scream series is its intelligence—not, I should clarify, the set-up gag of “we know slasher movies” but rather the fact that it doesn’t insult the viewer’s intelligence. It has genuinely good acting, plotting, writing, and some excellent filmmaking—a far cry from the incessant kill-fests that Jason et al. commit. Reminds me of the original Halloween in that respect—and of Bava.

Scream because of the fresh and original idea and suspense.
But Scream 2 was better filmmaking. The plot/writing, acting, editing, pacing, and kills were better, as the budget was bigger and allowed for better versions of a similar scenes from the first. The Cotton Weary/Sidney subplot, the trapped car scene with Sidney, Randy's suspenseful demise, and the trapped theater scene between Gail, Duey, and Ghostface were all well done, and both revealed villains were improved by far, the opening scene was better, and of course Laurie Metcalf's always consistent great acting.
Sidenote: Laurie Metcalf is one of the most underrated actresses in the biz today. Well, not such anymore given that she was just nominated for an Oscar. But I grew up on Roseanne, and it was hard to see Metcalf as anyone but Jackie. She seems like she'd be typecast in that role. Then I heard of Lady Bird where she plays the teen's mom. I figured she would just be playing her "Jackie" character since the role doesn't seem like much a stretch. But that's totally not the case; it's a different personality and she's so good in it that you forget she's Jackie. She has a tendency to do that.
Scream 3 was just horrible. Scream 4 was a slight improvement over 3 but still horrible. First 2 are the best. Scream 1 wins slightly.

The first film.
It could have been 4 tho. They were really close but then they had to do the ‘Dont f with the original’ ending and ruin what was a fresh and much more interesting end.

My favourite is the original. 2 and 4 are also pretty solid, too.
