What more can you say about this Steven Spielberg classic that hasn't already been said? Still a solid thriller from start to finish with three memorable performances at the center of it. Just a shame the sequels failed to live up to it (the second one is decent if unspectacular, the rest aren't so good).
Maltin Movie Guide Review:
Jaws (1975) - 4 out of 4 stars
"A rare case of a bubble-gum story (by Peter Benchley) scoring as a terrific movie. The story: New England shore community is terrorized by shark attacks; local cop (Scheider), ichthyologist (Dreyfuss), and salty shark expert (Shaw) determine to kill the attacker. Hold on to your seats! Screenplay by Benchley and Carl Gottlieb. Three Oscars include John Williams' now-classic score, Verna Fields' sensational editing. Benchley has cameo as a reporter on the beach. Followed by three sequels."

One of my top five movies ever. The sequels get progressively worse and worse. Part two is okay if a little standard. Jaws 3-D is stupid but enjoyably so. The Revenge is an abomination.

A platinum certified classic. Amazing when considering Spielberg was only 27 when he directed this. Robert Shaw also gives one of the most memorable performances ever.

One of the all-time greats! In fact I'm due for a revisit soon.
I thought Jaws 2 was passable, but Jaws 3D was pure junk. Never saw any of the other sequels but I think it's safe to say I'm not missing anything.

Is it that long ago! well I remember since I lived in a small Town, who's small cinemas was slowly dying, but when this movie came, there were cues around the blocks, it had never happened since Clark Gable kissed Scarlett O'Hara in that movie.
John Williams score is legend!

I hear the Blu-ray/4K versions also look/sound terrific for their respective formats.

Never before has a film set such a seemingly impossible bar that absolutely none of the shark movies that came after could even come close to replicating.

Oxygen tanks can't explode like that and Hooper seemed tacked on the ending.
Those are the two points brought up on these forums which has tarnished the film for me. lol

Marv is absolutely right, I would venture further and say that still today it's not only the greatest shark movie of all time, it's still the greatest creature feature of all time. Not even a fake looking shark can alter its power. From the brilliant opening where Chrissie is pulled through the water at a rate of knots, we don't need to see the shark, the terror is unbound, then onto the triage of actors giving superlative performances as they go to meet their devil at sea. Brilliant film making.
Going to watch it again now in fact!

Many have commented on how the shark looks so fake. I never even thought of it as looking fake, always thought it looked realistic enough. I'd rather have ole' Bruce the mechanical shark than a CGI one any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

The last time I watched it, I hadn’t seen it in probably four or five years and I was afraid it wouldn’t hold up.
It ended up being even better than I remembered. It’s so well-made. Just an all-around blast from start to finish.

1975 maybe the best year for best picture.
