For example the obscure little western Yankee (1966) is said to have inspired Sergio Leone’s Once Upon A Time In The West (1968). There is a scene in Yankee where villagers are tortured by bandits and a woman is forced to stand on her husband’s shoulders with a noose around her neck – an image which two years later led to one of the most famous scenes in Leone’s classic.
Also in 1969 Sam Peckinpah took a scene from Yankee concerning a scorpion inside a ring of fire and greatly expanded upon it for The Wild Bunch.

Inception takes inspiration from Dreamscape and Paprika. And a Scrooge McDuck comic book. Eh, I'm not sold on that. I honestly think that is coincidence. That isn't a movie though.

I don't know about "little known" but Cassavetes' Gloria (1980) was an inspiration for Bresson's Leon. The Professional (1994)

It! The Terror Beyond Space (1958) is said to have inspired Alien (1979).

IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE.
While I don't consider Ocean's 11 a classic, it's surely inspired by "Five Against the House", and I'm not sure "The Hidden Fortress" is lesser known, since everyone knows it inspired "Star Wars". I certainly don't consider "Armageddon" a classic, but it's a big budget thriller that is obviously a remake of the much better low budget "12 to the Moon". Likewise, the pathetic "No Country For Old Men" is a spoiled brat Hollywood style writer version of the lesser known classic "Nightfall".

Not sure if there was any actual influence, but the German t.v. movie 'World on a Wire' (1973) had a similar premise to 'The Matrix.'

Alien took inspiration from a slew of lesser known science fiction horror films, among them was Planet of the Vampires.

The costume designer for Raiders of the Lost Ark called the Heston film Secret of the Incas a direct inspiration for the series. "Secret of the Incas (1954) starring Charlton Heston and directed by Jerry Hopper is almost a shot for shot Raiders of the Los Ark. Since both were made by Paramount, and Secret is no longer available on video – I can only guess that Larry Kasdan took that script and updated it for Steven. A great idea. We did watch this film together as a crew several times, and I always thought it strange that the filmmakers did not credit it later as the inspiration for the series. Raiders stands on it’s own as a modern classic, but the fedora jacket and whip are right there on Charlton Heston in 1954. My own work is not diminished by having seen that marvellous film. The spirit of Raiders was also informed by Alan Ladd’s 1940’s film noirs, which also had the same hard boiled adventurer, clad in leather jacket and felt fedora. I have just seen Secret of the Incas again at the Eastman House in Rochester, and it really helped refresh my memory. Harrison’s Indiana is really a kinder and gentler Harry Steele, Heston’s archaeologist/adventurer. Heston’s fedora is considerably bigger and more unwieldy – compared to the one I designed for Indiana it looks practically like a picture hat!" web.archive.org/web/20140327132541/http://www.theraider.net/features/interviews/deborah_nadoolman.php

Not film influencing film but I can't help think the TV series 24 may have been influenced by the Johnny Depp film Nick Of Time. Same concept, same basic plot.
