Agreed. I think if there is one Western that's "generally considered the best Western", I would tend to think of one of the Westerns Clint Eastwood starred in that has the most all around appeal for the majority of the general public.
but with that said, John Wayne fans might be able to make a case in his favor and all. either way, I think "generally considered the best Western" is almost surely a Western featuring one of those two guys. but personally, I tend to side with Eastwood hands down though.
with that said... if I had to name one Western Clint Eastwood starred in that would be in the running for the #1 movie that's "generally considered the best Western", I would lean towards... The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966).

This is not my personal favorite but I would have to assume The Dark Knight (2008) has to be in the running for the #1 spot when looking at the majority of the wide public.
