In conversation with Variety, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver teased future explorations of Pandora in Avatar 3, 4, and 5, having collaborated with the writers involved in the rest of the franchise.
"...You have this kind of deeply relatable series of dynamics, inter-family, interpersonal, inter-clan, played out on these incredibly inflated scales of different worlds. The clans that you’re going to meet and the worlds that you’re going to find on Pandora — you can’t even imagine what they are. Just like the tulkun were a revelation for this movie, there’s lots more of that stuff to come. It’s incredibly exciting, the story that happens to the Sullys. You couldn’t predict it."

Cameron takes down Stranger Things..... Gotta love HIM ! Otherwise, you get — and I love Stranger Things — but you get the Stranger Things effect where they’re supposed to still be in high school [but] they look like they’re 27,” Cameron explained. “You know, I love the show. It’s OK, we’ll suspend disbelief. We like the characters, but, you know.”In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Champion praised the connection he formed with Cameron over their four and a half years of filming. “He’s just a cinematic genius,” Champion said. “After so many years, he has kind of become like a father figure to me.” During a subsequent interview with THR, Champion said that watching The Way of Water can feel like a “time capsule” given that he has been growing up in front of the cameras: “So it’s cool to see my teenage years onscreen, but I can still get immersed in the world of Pandora. www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/james-cameron-avatar-the-way-of-water-stranger-things-1235286453/

peaking with The Washington Post, Cheney Poole (who is Maori), says the film shows "very upfront and apparent romanticization of colonization.” Director James Cameron has stated before that the film is about imperialism, and many others have noted the coincidences between the films and the European military and Native American conflict during the colonial period. Scholar of decolonization at the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Denver Autumn Asher Blackdeer has a different issue with the film, and feels it lacks Indigenous representation. She told the publication: “I’m so tired of hearing Indigenous stories from a white perspective. We don’t need Hollywood big-budget movies. We could tell our own stories.”
Online, Indigenous activists are also taking to social media asking that others boycott the film while calling it out for cultural appropriation. movieweb.com/avatar-the-way-of-water-sparks-backlash-from-indigenous-activists/

Looks like the movie is doing pretty well. Too bad December 2022 is still looking to be a weak cap to the year at the box office.

T he dominant force at the box office is Avatar: The Way of Water which is up 5.5% from last weekend for a third weekend of $66.8 million. That gives The Way of Water the fourth best third weekend of all time, and the $422 million cume (and with Monday estimates that’s $444 million) means it has already grossed over three times its opening weekend and is ahead of Top Gun: Maverick at the same point in its release ($395 million). Internationally the film grew 4% over last weekend, bumping the global cume to $1.397 billion million. The last time we saw legs like this on a massive winter blockbuster was, appropriately enough, 13 years ago with the release of the first Avatar.

James Cameron has created a film that is so visually attractive and addictive that most moviegoers keep making repeat viewings on IMAX screens. It’s as if Cameron has invented the visual equivalent of smack making people come back for more.
