My buddy wears one to the mailbox. I put one on in the store but I don't wear it outside unless someone comes near me. I believe the biggest benefit to the mask is it prevents people from touching their face and transferring virus.
I'll say that I am a strong mask proponent. However, I don't consider myself to be a fanatic. I trust the repeated words of those who are trained in the sciences applicable to the Covid-19 situation.
When you say that your friend wears a mask to the mailbox, do you mean that he's going to a mailbox, on his property, to
collect his already delivered mail? Or, is he going to a public mailbox, a block (or more) away from his house, to
mail a letter? Also, does he live in an urban/sub-urban/rural area?
I'm in a city, and my mailbox is on my front porch. I don't bother with a mask, any more than I would wear one if I'm going to the curb to retrieve something from my car. If I'm walking a block (down the street), to the mailbox, to post something, I'm a
mysterious masked lady.
(Actually, not ... the neighbors all know me. It's fun to pretend.)
We have to wear masks in all places of business, as well as public transit, etc.. And, there's enough pedestrian traffic, even beyond "downtown," that I think it's prudent to use a mask.
I have not heard/read any professional warning that masks may be
generally dangerous. Although, I understand that some folks may be medically exempt, and are given documentation, to carry with them.
