He did so on purpose? I've never had that happen to me nor have I done it for anyone else. I'll buy a random homeless person a sandwich now and again, that's about it.

When Bay Area bridges all had real live human beings taking tolls, that would happen occasionally. A local columnist encouraged it, and toll takers would report to him, when a particularly long line of drivers had participated. It went well over 100, a couple of times.
But, the toll, on any given bridge, was the same for all cars. How would anyone at a drive-thru know what the next order would be, and how much would be needed to cover the cost?

And how much are tolls on the SF bridges now. Thanks!

You were expected to pay for the next car. i guess i'll go back soon and do it for someone else...modern society is so confusing!!! Never know, it could have been a one time thing. Usually they will ask if you want to pay it forward. I don't like it. It's basically an escrow account, with small orders paying for large and vice versa. If all orders were the same amount, it would be ther first person paying for the last. Starbucks has been known to start the chain by telling a person their order was paid for.

A smaller coffee shop. What I like is they are very community minded. If a tragedy happens they will donate a dollar from each order to the family I want to support them. But I gotta admit I am not much of a coffee drinker after 10 AM

There's no chance that you're ignorant. The tolls, and means of collecting them differs among the bridges.
I cross the GG more often than any, because my travels tend to take me north, and I'm only about a mile from the bridge. The human toll-takers were eliminated about 5 years ago. Most people subscribe to "FastTrak," which is a system that's based on credit card renewal, when the limit gets low. I think the toll is $7.50, for 2 way crossing. It's collectible southbound, coming into the City. For those who don't have "FastTrak," a camera records your license plate, and you are billed."
The Oakland-SF Bridge has variable tolls, depending on the time of day, and the heaviest commute hours. The "Bay" bridge still has human toll takers. From where I live, I take the GG bridge, to the San Rafael-Richmond bridge, because it's faster than taking the Bay Bridge. I'm not sure of the toll ... "FastTrak," just puts it on my account.
It's been a long time since I've crossed the; San Mateo, Dumbarton, or Carquinez bridges, so I don't know the tolls, there. However, the "FastTrak" system works on all bridges.
I like to go south, to San Mateo County ... no bridges.

I haven't been to the bay area in years. Part of it was not knowing how the bridges tolls worked. Thank you!
