Exactly. Even after 30 years they haven't recovered from the desolation of Soviet domination.
I will say one thing though. A few years ago I hired a Polish immigrant girl to work on the assembly line. I got to know her pretty well. She was fluent in Polish, English, Russian and could read and write Latin. This was a poor immigrant girl with only a high school education. I don't think Americans should be all that smug.
It's not the people, it's the governments. You know Putin is warning everyone to stay out of Belarus right now. He has a fetish for a Soviet reunion.

Was she the stalker? When I think of Eastern Europe I think of orphanages. And beautiful people. And commieblocks.

Russia has never given up it's designs on Belarus and the Ukraine. They've annexed The Crimea in Ukraine of course. They wanted access to the Mediterranean. Russia's geography sucks. There's virtually no usable coastline and Siberia is a frozen wasteland

I have to remind my man sometimes that the official position of Canada is that Crimea is still in Ukraine, as much as he thinks otherwise.

The above pic is from Romania, btw. It has roman letters on the cop cars.

Uzbekistan and Crimea. Not really Russia, I know. His dad is Tatar. Haven't asked him where his mom is from.

Yes, she was. Haven’t talked to her in 4 years. I’ve noticed a pattern of coming across high concentrations of people of a specific post-Soviet nationality/ethnicity in particular locations in North America. The store I used to work at: Ukrainian customers New York: Jewish shop owners Miami area: Kazakhs (or other Asians) The store I currently work at: 3 coworkers from Uzbekistan

Somewhere in West Virginia: “Hey, Marabelle, watch you thank Roosha’s like?” “I donno, Savannah, pretty’n here, I suppose.” That’s what happens when you elect a guy richer than some Russian oligarchs for governor.

They wanted access to the Mediterranean. Russia's geography sucks. There's virtually no usable coastline and Siberia is a frozen wasteland The majority of Crimea's population is Russian. It's obvious the Soviets placed them there as a hold on the region. Look what happened, when Ukraine became independent, Russia grabbed the Crimea. Well it was 25 years apart but yeah.
According to this, the 2001 and 2014 censuses show an interesting shift in population but the 2001 census was administrated by Ukraine and the 2014 census was conducted by Russia.

Well.....it might be a little silly......but what comes to mind for me are songs like this (except not in English): About Medjugorje I know very little, but I do remember listening to an interview with Fr. Malachi Martin on YouTube, and he believed it was a faked miracle.
