For people that listen to podcasts Bill Simmons does a new podcast on Channel 33 and he and a guest discuss a sports film and whether or not it deserves to be in the fictional "sports movie hall of fame". So far they have inducted Moneyball, Jerry Maguire, and Any Given Sunday.
What are some sports films that you would induct? For me there are some no brainers like Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, Major League, among some others.
For me there are three that come to mind right away and they are For the Love of the Game, Tin Cup, and The Replacements.
For the Love of the Game is my personal favorite baseball movie and I just love how the story mixes in with the perfect game that Billy Chapel is throwing. The acting in it is great and it to me feels like a real baseball game being played.
Tin Cup is another great performance by Kevin Costner in another sports film and it just has some real funny moments in it. Like when Roy and Simms have the bet on who can hit the longest shot from their position and Simms just smiles and hits his down a road so that it continues to bounce and go farther was just a great moment. That and the constant shots he chose to do at the end leading to his twelve. I often quote "But they'll always remember your twelve!" as if it's a positive thing haha.
Then there is The Replacements. I don't know if this is a great movie or just a movie that I enjoy. Some of the football in it is obviously questionable and how they're able to get a guy out of prison was dumb. But I felt like the rest of the film had legit heart to it with great characters like Shane Falco, Jimmy McGinty, Clifford Franklin, and Nigel Gruff. I honestly still get chills when Falco runs out of the locker room after half time of the final game and the crowd goes nuts. Also Eddie Martel was such a great character to really hate. He's right up there with Shooter McGavin ins regards to sports movie villains.

It's a fun podcast topic, but I disagreed with the Jerry Maguire and White Men Can't Jump episodes. JM isn't really a sports movie, and WMCJ is terribly dated. It was great for its day but it doesn't hold up.
Favorite films by sport:
Football Necessary Roughness
Any Given Sunday
The Replacements (really a knockoff of Necessary Roughness)
Baseball Eight Men Out
Major League
The Natural
Soul of the Game
Basketball Blue Chips
Hoosiers
Hoop Dreams (if docs count)
Hockey Miracle
Slapshot
Boxing Rocky
The Fighter
It's funny because baseball seems to be the sport Hollywood understands best how to make a great movie about. I'm not really a huge baseball fan but I can name a ton of solid flicks about the sport. I love basketball, but I'm hard pressed to think of five good movies about it.
OP, if you enjoyed The Replacements, I think you'd get a kick out of Necessary Roughness as well.

I know there was a brief TV show of the same time on the USA network (i'm sure it's not related to the film you speak of) but I never heard of this film. I might have to seek it out sometime. I personally think Baseball movies are probably done so well because they're a lot easier to film because the game itself is a lot slower. I can only imagine how hard it would be to film Football or Hockey realistically because of how fast shit happens. I forgot they did WMCJ. I never cared for that movie but I understand it as Bill is a lot older than me so he probably holds more nostalgia to that film. I wouldn't be surprised if He Got Game made it in too. Rocky you're right is a shoe in I forgot about that movie. Same goes for Raging Bull and Million Dollar Baby I'm sure. Miracle I think would make it in at well. I've never seen The Natural but that movie is always held up there in terms of greatness for people. 8 Men Out I enjoyed and could see. I know he was talking about bringing a guy on for Rounders. I personally don't consider poker to be a sport but I love that movie so if Bill puts it in then fine. I'd say The Mighty Ducks might be up for it at some point as well.

Agreed about Poker not being a sport but I love that flick as well. I'd love to hear an episode on that. Good call on He Got Game, I always forget to mention that movie for some reason.

"Jerry Maguire" was certainly about football -- not necessarily so much the games themselves.
"Mystery, Alaska" was a funny movie which was partially about hockey. Of course "Slap Shot" is an all time classic.

I don't see how Moneyball deserves to be in there.
A League of Their Own and Breaking Away, possibly. North Dallas Forty
What about The Hustler? The original Longest Yard was pretty good. Requiem for a Heavyweight with Anthony Quinn.

One on One is a very good basketball film. There were three now-cheesy but still fun basketball movies in the late Seventies: - One on One, which can be seen as somewhat of a 'prequel' to Blue Chips with a similar storyline (naive young recruit enters the big corrupt college machine; cheating alumni get him in trouble), a similar school name (Western State in OoO vs. Western University in BC), similar school colors, and even a somewhat similar ending -- Western wins the big game and then the main character walks away;
- Fast Break, starring Gabe Kaplan -- kind of similar to WMCJ with the angle of the street hustlers;
- The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh, starring Julius Erving, which was kind of a cross between Semi-Pro and Space Jam

I don't see how Moneyball deserves to be in there. Yeah, Moneyball, like Draft Day, is much more about the front office process of putting the team together than the games themselves. Jerry Maguire is also like that except Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding)'s football action did make up a pretty significant part of the plot. But they are definitely all sports movies.

Well, Rocky won Best Picture, and any such HoF that left out Slapshot wouldn't even be worth visiting.

One on One is a very good basketball film. The movie sucks a bit, except for Annette O'Toole, she was quite bangalicious at the time.

What, no "Knute Rockne All American"?
No "Jim Thorpe All American"?
They made movies before 2,000 you know.
