So, there's been like 10 doctors so far? Didn't the Doctor, Tom Baker, say at one time that there could only be 8 regenerations? Though I heard that back in about 1980.

Actually it was established in The Deadly Assassin: Part Two that twelve regenerations is the maximum. I believe that in New Who the Time Lords somehow the managed to overcome that limitation and grant the Doctor additional regenerations.

There can be a total of 13 Doctors per regeneration set... And the Time Lords can give out additional regeneration sets. In the original set there were 11 + 1 + 1 There was a Doctor who fought in the Time War, known as the "War Doctor" (John Hurt), that is frequently not counted... Because... The Doctor heals, he doesn't kill. Apparently, within the first day of being a new Doctor, if he gets injured, he can heal himself. The Tenth Doctor (David Tennant), had his hand cut off, and he grew another one. Later, when the Daleks shot the Tenth Doctor, The Doctor used the regeneration energy to heal himself, and then transferred the rest of the regeneration energy into his cut off hand, which later became another Tenth Doctor. There were two Tenth Doctors for a while. The current Doctor is the first in the new set, and he is played by Peter Capaldi.

As long as there's enough interest in the Dear Doctor, he will be able to regenerate.

If we're going to cite episode references for how many regens he has, currently the number is indeterminate: "How many regenerations did we give you?" - Rassilon, Hell Bent

At the end of Matt Smith's reign, it was shown how he managed more regenerations. (Left this vague, in case you didn't see the episode).
