The biggest surprise is Deadpool. No one saw the performance it had coming. Not bad for an R-rated February release.
I think the disappointments of the year (domestically speaking) go to: Fantastic Beasts BvS X-Men
All these made money, but I thought they fell short of expectations.
The winner of 2016 is Disney with 5 movies in the top 10. Childrens movies also did very well. Five in the top 10 and 6 in the top 11.

I thought The Secret Life of Pets would make between 190-230 million domestically, but it ended up making almost 370 million, about as much as the far superior Despicable Me 2. I was surprised because of how mediocre the film was.

The Legend of Tarzan -- which earned $126 Million U.S. (almost $360 Million total worldwide).
Featuring such an "archaic" character, I expected it to bomb massively.

Deadpool definitely is the biggest surprise. I don't think anybody, anywhere, expected a mid-budget R rated Ryan Reynolds superhero flick about a relatively little known cult comic book character to make almost as much as Batman V Superman.

Deadpool, as explained in the above post.
Biggest disappointment is Zoolander 2, which was justified since it's horrible.

Deadpool was the big surprise and FINALLY made Ryan Reynolds a box-office star. Disney is the big dog on the block. They just can't be beat!

I'd say Deadpool. Secret Life of Pets probably second.

Easily Deadpool. I was so off with my prediction . I literally thought it would do Kingsman numbers at best domestically (like 125 million) . Boy was I wrong.

Deadpool and Zootopia were big surprises. R-rated stuff doesn't typically hit financially, and everyone was saying Moana would be the bigger hit but Zootopia blew it away worldwide.

Deadpool was the first thing that came to my mind. I thought it was going to be something that fanboys were hyping out the wazoo and the average joe couldn't care less about.
