Noticed at my local store last week shelves were completely empty. It was jarring to see. I've noticed several YouTube videos chronicling the same thing. Are they being phased out? No new ones left to produce? The bargain bin was still full however. I'll check the next time I'm out.

What is the new technology? btw How did you pick 'forca' for a user name? In Portuguese it has a good meaning.

But more and more people tend to stream or download movies these days. So physical media isn't exactly the popular route. Also my name is from the Nelly Furtado song "Forca". Just really liked the song from my College days. So I've been using it as a handle for awhile now. ×D

I think most people who buy DVDs does it online. Yeah that too. I always enjoyed doing it in person. In the Wild. I haven't done any online shopping in ages.

I used to love buying DVDs, and expanding my collection. I would go through the video departments of stores like Barnes & Noble and Target. The mega-rental chains like "Blockbuster," and "Hollywood," would have sections of for-sale films. I ordered a few online. And, I made some great "finds," at garage sales ... $1:00 for a fun classic, was so exciting.
About the time that the stores began to scale back their selection, I started to compare the physical space that I was devoting to them, VS the frequency with which I tended to watch any given movie. The equation was way out of balance. Also; streaming was becoming easier, the rental chains went out of business, and Covid has put garage sales on the back-burner. As Feologild said, "online" is still available.
It's likely that the "Covid effect," is at play, too. Fewer films have been made/released. Some popular films are being released to streaming. Job loss takes a toll on spending, and we're less used to "going out," to buy.
Enigma, what good meaning does "Forca," have in Portuguese? "Fortune?" We need all of the good meanings that we can get ... in any language.

I have a HUGE collection of DVDs which will last me up to the day I die but so personally I’m not that concerned but the problem with digital versions is that they’re still controlled by the companies unless you have a copy saved on a device. It’s also impossible to buy digital downloads dirt cheap at second hand and charity shops.

I was just at walmart. They still had the $3.74 bin.
They had some box sets. I saw young sheldon season 3. But I didn’t see many movies outside the 3.74 bin in dvd format

Those DVD tumbled bins have to be an even worse idea than the obligatory "did you find everything you were looking for ?" as you are checking out !

My local Walmart recently cut their movie section in half, and shelves were empty during the transition, but they are still selling new DVDs...
Another one I regularly go to, decreased their size by about half, some time ago, but it is still the same size as the one I go to weekly...
However, I still see racks & displays in the main walkways and a couple of bargain bins at both...
Outside of that, it seems that it's just some kids vids, franchise packs, & TV Shows... sitting on the shelves.
Actually, I'm not surprised Walmart just downsized... Many of their movies were the same older ones just sitting on the shelves forever it seems... It was time they cleaned house, and got rid of the shelf warmers.
But I think another poster also mentioned, Covid-19 has slowed down new releases, and it probably will do so for quite some time...
Also another reason to tighten their inventory...
If the old ones are not selling now when there are so few new releases, then why would they sell later?

Might have to check my Walmart. Guessing it's because of shipment issues or the digital era is making a major impact.

I think most people who buy DVDs does it online. A lot of dvds these days are only online because they are MOD (made/manufactured on demand) DVD-Rs a lot of companies have restored to that instead of selling it to stores. my main reason for buying movies online over a store is because I don't drive. Plus half the time I get to walmart and get a chance to see their selection, they don't have what I was looking for
