Watching the last episodes you have to ask it. It is so much better now.
Series 8 should have been something like this one.

Because she was an interesting character. She definitely had the most development tho I haven't seen the last couple of S10 but I like Bill too.
I still hope we (somehow) get to hear the words exchanged between Clara and 12 beneath Gallifrey.

She was supposed to be leaving in the 2014 Christmas special, the dream crab one. But as they were filming her last scenes she got upset about leaving and begged Moffat to let her stay. That's why they had that scene with old Clara - that was supposed to be the way they would be writing her out. They just changed the ending.

I don't know the situation with Freema and Catherine, whether they were planned for one season only from the start, but it seems with the majority of the cast, both Doctors and Companions, the actors just get signed on and stay as long as they want. There was some talk about Tennant being forced out, but I think originally he was the one who contemplated leaving after series 4. Smith made the call on when he left, same with Capaldi, Gillan and Coleman. Story-wise it might be better if they changed up sooner, but I think production-wise, it's easier to work with a static cast than to always be hiring replacements.

i don't know. She was an incredibly annoying character, possibly the most annoying NuWho companion of all, though the competition is stiff. the Doctor should have slung her out the tardis into deep space.

The problem with Clara was that she was less of a character and more of a plot device. She was sort of interesting while she was 'the Impossible Girl' but once that was resolved there wasn't really anything to her.

She was sort of interesting while she was 'the Impossible Girl' but once that was resolved there wasn't really anything to her. I disagree with this assessment. I think she definitely had a clear character arc after the "Impossible Girl" mystery was resolved, it just may not be to everyone's liking. During series 7, she didn't really have anything of a character. But in series 8-9, her character development was that she became more and more like the Doctor. There were scenes, even episodes, devoted to him training her to "be the Doctor". This was a source of internal conflict as Clara struggled with becoming like the Doctor as well as external conflict as both of them wanted to be the boss. This arc peaked several times, such as the cold open of Death in Heaven and the credits gag, and culminated with Clara losing her life by pulling a "Doctor move" in Face the Raven. And it resolved with Clara getting her own TARDIS and roaming the universe with her own companion while taking the "long way round" to Gallifrey and her death as a fixed point in time. This is about as complete of a story arc as any companion has ever had.

Take it with a grain of salt.
