I like redemption stories, and martial artsy movies where the heroes don't have to kill everything to win. These are two separate categories but if they cross, all the better xD Karate Kid, Best of the Best, Sidekicks, Underdog Kids, etc I also love stories like Three Amigos, Galaxy Quest, Wild Hogs, etc, where people pose as something but have to become it for real. Trying to branch out a bit, any recommendations folks can offer would be great I also consider the Karate Kid, Rocky, and Best of the Best great movies, so don't be shy about recommending bad movies (if anyone's feeling particularly generous, I'm always on the look out for steampunk movies (I love Wild Wild West and Jonah Hex, so again don't be afraid to recommend movies most consider rubbish) and good swashbucklers

Here's some great and good movies, which fit the redemption category:
The Verdict Dolores Claiborne Jerry Maguire An Officer and a Gentleman Scent of a Woman The Last Samurai Gran Torino Rain Man Quiz Show Jagged Edge Midnight Run Sling Blade The Wrestler Wall Street Carlito's Way Last Man Standing Role Models Talk Radio The Longest Yard (1974)
If you're looking for a more recent movie, Flight is an okay redemption movie.
Jackie Chan movies from the 80s and 90s would work for your other request.

Thanks both for the suggestions, I've seen enough of those to trust your judgement that the others are good

Redemption: American History X The Shawshank Redemption (haha - it's in the name) The Butterfly Effect (make sure you watch the director's cut) Movies where someone is forced into becoming 'something else' quickly OR has to learn a new skill: Training Day Run Lola Run Legally Blonde Adventures in Babysitting (1987 version - I haven't seen the remake) Flashdance (Rocky for girls ) Catch Me If You Can The Man Who Knew Too Little Quirky-romance: My First Mister Pretty in Pink Mannequin Dirty Dancing Say Anything Son in Law Most of Woody Allen's good movies would probably be in this category... Steam-punk-esque: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Waterworld (much more post-apocalyptic MadMax style than Steampunk really, but O well) The City of Lost Children Misc but popped into my head randomly: The Breakfast Club Good Will Hunting Trading Places PS - The quality of these movies varies hugely...

Pleasantville was a superb film Anyone know of good quality fencing type movies? I've seen By the Sword, various incarnations of the Three Musketeers, Le Bossu.. but for some reason I can't seem to find many others from keywording imdb with swashbuckler or fencing.

I think I'm the only person in the world who absolutely despises Pleasantville, but so be it... Fencing films? What movielover suggested, absolutely ( The Princess Bride is one of my favorite movies), to which I'll add The Adventures of Robin Hood and Captain Blood, of course, in addition to such unusual choices as The Assassination Bureau (great little movie!), Le pacte des loups, and the superb '02 Count of Monte Cristo adaptation. I'm sure there are others of which I'm just not thinking at the moment--oh, yes, of course, how could I forget The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp? Incredible, beautiful, moving film.

martial arts:
Have you watched any Jackie Chan movies? They're family-friendly if you don't like over-the-top violence, plus there are amazing stunts and jaw-dropping martial arts action.
people posing:
How about 'Miss Congeniality' I and II?
Maybe 'We're No Angels' (1989)?
steampunk:
City of Lost Children The Time Machine (1960) 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) Tai Chi Hero (also martial arts)

For clarification, when I say movies where folks have to become a thing, I mean like in the Three amigos and Galaxy Quest, they're actors who pose as characters, but have to step up to be those characters for real. I love that stuff, but only seen it done a couple of times Waiting for a bunch of these to arrive, thanks folks. And nicely done maxwellperfect for Tai Chi Hero, I loved those movies

I loved the Assassination Bureau, such amazing goofy entertainment, I remember losing it completely when they find the bomb xD I was half expecting Adam West's Batman himself to run in

Actually, it reminded me of the Roger Moore Bonds more than anything--but what the Moore films should have been (silly but joyous entertainment, with a very British air) rather than what they were (slogs for the most part, in my opinion, with the non-charismatic Moore--which also amuses me, because Moore is delightful in The Saint). In fact, The Assassination Bureau united just about all of my interests--puzzle-plotting, adventure, duelling, history, charming hero and heroine, nasty villain--so I pretty much loved it. Not that my doing so quite surprised me, based on the plot description alone.

If you liked Assassination Bureau here's three more you would probably like:
A Shock to the System (1990) starring Michael Caine. Without a Clue (1988) also starring Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley. Bullseye! (1990) starring Michael Caine and Roger Moore.

Well, then I´d suggest Midnight In Paris to some extent and Night at the Museum. I´ll be back when I think of more.

Seen by hardly anyone: Gary Fleder's brilliant oddball crime movie, "Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead". Made in 1995 with a cast it would cost millions to get today.
