I always hone my favorite slicing knife before I cut/slice things like potatoes, or other veggies that can slip if you put too much pressure on them. Lots of veggies fall into the slippery category. What kind of a sharpener do you use? Chef's knife or Santoku?

This seems like an appropriate subject that goes with the time of the season. For at least the 15 years I've been on a streak where at least once a year I accidentally cut myself. From kitchen knives, mandoline, glass, box cutters, chainsaw, pieces of metal etc... These are all cuts that are more than some "usual" or "normal" cut. Most of these bleed profusely and for a few days. I've never went to get stitches but with some of these I should have and have done some weird things to stop the bleeding. I thought this year I might make it but of course I was wrong. A couple days ago I was using a box cutter. This wasn't exactly a cut but more of a stabbing. I was cutting a plastic tie and after I cut it proceeded to stab my thumb on the other hand because I was leaning on what I was cutting. Luckily the blade wasn't all the way out but it was out enough. I stabbed it into the the base of my thumb. Yes, there was blood. A lot of blood. Still bleeding. I can still wiggle it but I cant grip anything or make a thumbs up. Which means my dream of being Arthur Fonzarelli in the reboot of Happy Days will never happen. Anybody have any good self slice and dice stories? I'm squeamish about blood and reading your post made me flinch. I've fainted a couple of times at the sight of it. I remember my father cutting his finger once and blood spurting out. I fainted and my poor father was left holding me up with one hand and trying to not have the blood go all over me with the other. All I can say is, if you feel it might need stiches, get them. This last one you should be careful about since you say you can't raise your thumb. Is it swollen or blue? If so, you could have cut the tendon. I snapped a tendon in one of my fingers years ago and I still can't bend it properly due to my not having gone to the docs right away.

A week later the bleeding has stopped (after 3 days) Not swollen anymore but I still can't give a thumbs up. Very tender and more painful now than it was when I did it. It's bruised above the wound but now below the wound and above it is a weird shade of yellow. Looks kind of like a bruise the yellow seems to be spreading. Not sure what that's about.

From your description, I really think you should see a doc. Yeah, I know. Doctors and I don't get along. Haven't been in a very long time. They misdiagnosed me for over a month and in the meantime I was living with a blood clot I developed after an injury. Not just one doctor but 3! I do think i'm going to need to bite the bullet on this one.

I am too short that's why I get burned. Perhaps your SO has the same issue. My armspan isn't quite long enough. We will have to be careful Do you keep your knives sharp? Mine are dull as can be. Lol When you're pulling things out of the oven are you pulling the rack out or just reaching in? I have these rubber gloves that I use for the kitchen and grilling. They're kind of obnoxious but the work really well. YES, please do be careful! There have been times that I've hit my finger and nothing really happened because the knife was dull. I was so thankful. Then I'll cut a tomato and wonder why my knives aren't sharper! My knives aren't always the sharpest. I try to sharpen them once a month but usually don't actually follow through. i try to pull the rack out. good reminder opus thanks!! I am short and hit my arm on the side of a pan. I like your ideas of rubber gloves. I'll look for something like that. Oven mitts don't seem to give me enough control. thanks!!

When I was about 9 years old, I was fooling around in my Dad's garage, and cut a slice off my left index finger with one of his box cutters. I still remember the sound as this little slab of flesh landed on the cement. Mind you, it was a very small slab of flesh, not like I had to be rushed to the hospital, right around the knuckle I think. I still have this little "empty spot" that's hollowed out.
I do my best to keep my knives very sharp because that helps keep accidents down. What I notice is when they get dull, THAT is when I get hurt. One time, a few years back, that's what happened. I cut myself on the tip of my thumb. It was a small slice, but the knife, while dull by my standards, was sharp to most, and when I took the towel away, the blood sprayed all over, and it just looked like a Jackson Pollock experiment gone wild.
It's amazing how much our little digits really can bleed.

@opus Ouch! I'm sorry I've cut my legs shaving quite a bit I know, right? Who stabs their thumb? How is that even possible.? This is part of the funk I was talking about. Are you cutting your legs from going crosswise or using a dull blade? When I first started shaving I used a man's blade, they didn't have them for women back then. So I would cut myself. Now, when I cut myself it's from going crosswise

I was going to try and throw it over a fence, so I gave it a good throw and it didn't leave my hand There was a nail in it that went through my finger. I went home crying and my dad pulled the nail out. It was pretty much to the bone and didn't bleed a drop

I've sliced my hands with chisels too many times, a few times down to the bone. I never go to the doctor either. Squeeze it to make it bleed, apply pressure, neosporin, bandage, back to work. One time I cut my thumb at work and it got infected, doubled in size overnight, but all the other times it was just sore for a few days.

@opus I was so worried you were a cutter from the title of the thread. Glad to see you are talking about normal household accidents! I don't get cut often though I won't use a Mandoline! But the other day my husband was using the electric hedge trimmer. He zigged when he should have zagged. luckily it could have been much worse. He had on leather gloves which were cut. The nail on his middle finger was cut to the flesh. Took a lot of healing but he is okay now. Scary!! I don't cut myself often (watch now I will. lol) but I get burns from the oven often. Since I don't cook that much I don't get burned so often, but I remember once I wanted to fry something and instead of dipping the food into the oil to see if it was hot enough, I dipped my index finger in! It hurt like hell but at least I found out the oil was enough for me to fry my chips in

So, what happened with your thumb? Did you go to the docs or not?

Not right now. I go in cycles with the beard thing. Beards take a lot of work unless you go ZZ Top. Do you have a beard?

The worst cutting accident I had was when I worked in a supermarket deli as a teenager. I had just sliced some liverwurst, which is all messy, so I was cleaning the machine when I cut my finger.
Even though it hurt a bit and was bleeding a lot, I was more afraid of getting in trouble. The manager was strict about us wearing cutting gloves. Gee, I wonder why!
She scolded me but was nice about it otherwise. I felt embarrassed about my heavily bandaged finger and tried to hide it behind my back when serving customers. They were like, cut yourself on the machine?
