Cool thread. A long time ago, I realized that most of my favorite song had one thing in common, a great bass. JPJ's bass opening on Dazed and Confused still sends chills up my spine. Geezer on War Pigs, Tom Hamilton on Sweet Emotion and many others. I tried to play the bass when i was younger but had a hell of a time finding someone who could teach a lefty to play. Great to see Carol Kaye mentioned. She laid down so many great bass lines but never got the props because she wasn't an official member of a band. McCartney said his bass playing on all the Beatles music from Sgt. Pepper on was influenced by Carol Kaye. The Wrecking Crew should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Studio musicians are a huge part of Rock. If performers who had fuck all to do with Rock like Dolly Parton and NWA get in...
One who I didn't see mentioned is Billy Sheehan. A player who can be described as "lead bass", Sheenan, to me, is the 2nd greatest bass player of all time (Entwistle). Some of the bass leads he laid down are amazing. He played with a local power trio named Talas. I seen Talas a lot in local clubs and always thought they would make it big. They had two albums that never got a lot airplay and Sheehan finally left Talas when he joined David Lee Roth's band

Billy Sheehan has a strong presence on youtube. I've seen a number of videos with him on bass.
