I certainly don't think that he thinks that, but he seems to be unaware of how popular Bane is. The part that really bothers me is that he is telling people what they should and shouldn't like. This is a serious problem and it is also very condescending. He never said that. He said he thinks a lot of fans don’t fully appreciate how layered and ambitious Hardy’s performance was. He’s literally just complimenting Tom Hardy, why is this so controversial? FWIW, I think he’s wrong. Bane has become pretty iconic, especially recently. Same thing.

By that logic, calling a movie underrated is “telling people how to think.” It is, which is why I hate when people use that term.

It is, which is why I hate when people use that term. Hmm. Agree to disagree, I suppose. There is obviously more nuance to it than that, but generally it rubs me the wrong way. Christopher Nolan comes off as egotistical here, because he is talking about a performance in his own movie. He is assuming the reasons and so are the people who use words like overrated and underrated when talking about movies.

I read his comments more as him saying how impressed he was that Hardy squeezed so much out of the role - which isn’t exactly a glowing review of his own writing.

Sure, but he is still talking about his own movie. That is still a secondary matter. Most of the people who dislike Tom Hardy's performance hate the voice. I have never seen anyone say that his physical acting isn't good. It all seems to come down to the voice, which many people find ridiculous. You can admire certain aspects of something and still not like it overall.

The Revenant for me. Bane was excellent, but I thought he was even better than Leo.
