Can't believe no one's started a thread on what many consider the SCARIEST movie ever made: The Exorcist!
I read the book first, which is like a wild roller coaster ride. For the most part, William Friedkin's film touches all the right bases and sticks to the novel pretty closely. Helped that William Peter Blatty wrote the screenplay based on his book. Acting is top-notch, directing is smooth, without being gimmicky. The effects for the day are still a sight to behold.
For anyone who doesn't know, The Exorcist tells the story of 12 year old Regan McNeil, and how she's possessed by a satanic demon. Linda Blair was indeed 12 when she won the role of Regan, and she does a great job. But the demon's voice, dubbed in by Oscar-winner Mercedes McCambridge is what makes The Exorcist truly memorable. It's a voice from hell, and you truly believe the poor girl is possessed.
Let's hear some Exorcist love!

I read the book first too and it still scared me so bad I was afraid to watch it. I was just 18 at the time

I saw the movie first when I was 14, and I had seen people talk about it on TV, 'it was THE scariest movie, I thought we were all going to hell for watching it', and I was anticipating being so scared I wouldn't be able to sleep. But I didn't find it scary, interesting, disturbing, but not scary. A couple years later I found the book at the library, I liked it better than the movie.

Apparently, the fictional Regan could poop in her Depends and was not above tossing it at people who annoyed her. They very tastefully kept that part out of the film version1

Still one of my favorite movies of any genre. Blatty and Friedkin made a hell of a team.

I need a revisit. I've only seen it once in its entirety, but I did enjoy it.

My all-time favorite horror movie, I try to watch it once a year (usually around Halloween). The film was masterfully directed, written and acted, the makeup was fantastic as was the use of sound (which is very important in horror). The Sting was good, but I feel The Exorcist should have won best picture of 1973 at the Oscars. I love Paper Moon and think Tatum O'Neal deserved best supporting actress, but you could have made a case for Linda Blair, and definitely a case for Burstyn, Miller and Friedkin to win in their categories. I'm not sure we'll ever see another horror film like it, considering horror generally isn't taken seriously as a genre and also considering the sate of modern cinema.

Fast forward to visiting friends for a weekend, they want to go out to dinner and a movie, didn't tell me the movie, and we show up at the theater, and guess what's playing? Yeah, so I sat through it on the edge of my seat with my hands over my eyes for just about all the nasty scenes. All in all, it's very good. And still scares the crap out of me!

I watched the movie first, liked it well enough. Read the book later, loved it. Watched the film again, I like it a lot more now, but I still prefer the book.
It's indeed very disturbing and deserving of its title of the scariest movie ever. I still can't believe some of the stuff they got away with in 1973, like the crucifix masturbation scene.

Read the book when I was a young kid. My Mom took it away from me when she found it.
The movie is definitely creepy. Probably because of the possession of a young girl, IMO.

Funny you should mention the book being taken away from you. My mother did the same when she found out my 14 year old sister was reading it.

Favorite scene in the Exorcist?
I think it's the part where the doctors arrive and find Regan bouncing up and down on her bed and yelling, "fuck me! Fuck me!" That is definitely a high-energy moment that just doesn't let up!

I first saw the film in 1990 on VHS while I was in my first year of college. I watched it by myself, but I didn't find it scary at all. In fact, I never reall have. I didn't dislike it or love it. It was just a film.
About a decade later, I watched it again, and I enjoyed it more. Every time I watch it, I gain a greater appreciation for it. I love the atmosphere it builds and sustains. I now own it on Blu-Ray. It's a movie all horror fans should have in their collection regardless of whether they like it or not.

I found it a bit over the top. So did my mom when she saw it in the theater with my dad when it first came out. In fact she found it to be so over the top that she laughed at it.
