Saw this over the weekend. It's ... ya know. More of the same. It's competent, and Patrick Wilson is a competent director in terms of approximating the look and feel of the other movies, but the other movies are very standard looking and feeling in modern, PG-13, studio horror movies. It more or less looks like most of the movies in that category.
His performance is fine, but Rose Byrne gets completely sidelined, which is a shame, and the actor playing his son isn't very good. He's not like embarrassingly bad or anything, but he has to shoulder a lot of the screen time and he's just rather bland. I know he's a fairly prominent actor, but I don't recall seeing him before, and I find him quite forgettable.
And the story involves him going to college and befriending this girl who is mistakenly assigned to be his roommate... The actress can't really be blamed, but every line of dialogue she speaks is like hearing nails on a chalkboard. It's horrible. She's so annoyingly written it's almost unbearable.
Anyway... Just another Wan-o-verse movie. They're all pretty much the same level bland. There are echoey old records, creaky floors, quiet moments followed by very loud moments to try to make you jump. When you hear the term 'The Further' you roll you eyes just as much now as the first time. I'm not sure if they'll make another one of these, but there's certainly no definitive end to it.
Also, the end credits features a VERY cheesey song, apparently by a band called Ghost, that features Patrick Wilson on vocals. It starts off as a cheesey ballad and then becomes a cheesey psuedo-80s-metal song. It's quite silly. But it should be noted that Patrick Wilson is a legitimate singer with real theater chops. You might not know it from this song, but he really can sing.

I'm like 25 movies behind in New releases as usual... Good review. I'm way behind too. It's been a real challenge to try to watch movies in the last year and half, but this is just one that recently popped up on Netflix. I don't even have a particular interest in it, but just noticed it was available and pulled the trigger.

So unless it can be streamed...I also don't buy dvds anymore. (Not enough room.)

But I have cable and share streaming with a lot of different family members, so I have most of them. I also dont but DVDs anymore. Mostly just because I'm not the re-watcher I once was.
