I loved Love Story when I was a kid. I saw it again and Ali MacGraw was awful. I thought, this has to be the worst performance to ever get an Oscar nomination.
What's yours?

John Mills in Ryan's Daughter. That's one that leaps to mind
As to a winner, Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman. Okay, not talking Tor Johnson-esque here, but SOAW was not one of his best performances. He acted like a blind person and said "HOO WAH". Big fat soggy deal. And, yeah, it was a "make up" Oscar, like Henry Fonda in On Golden Pond or John Wayne in True Grit.

Definitely agree about Wayne. IMO, that Oscar should have gone to Dustin Hoffman for MIDNIGHT COWBOY.

It is fine if you think Hoffman should have won, but that doesn't make The Duke's win the worst ever. Wayne was fine in that role simultaneously parodying his image and creating an interesting and complex character on its own.

He had a lot worse, The Green Berets, The Conqueror, Jet Pilot. He had better, Red River, Liberty Valance, Iwo Jima. I thought Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman was one of the worst. And there are probably worse than that.

No matter how good Dustin was, Duke was still deserving.

And my argument isn’t for Hoffman over Wayne. It’s for many performances over Pacino. I thought all the nominees were much better. Robert Downey in Chaplin, Denzel Washington in Malcolm X, Stephen Rea in The Crying Game and Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven. Hell, I thought Gary Oldman in Dracula, Tom Cruise in AFew Good Men, Daniel Day Lewis in Last of the Mohicans were better.

So Goodman's not allowed to prefer Hoffman over Wayne if he wants? Thought we were simply stating what wins/ nominations we disagree with.

So Goodman's not allowed to prefer Hoffman over Wayne if he wants? Thought we were simply stating what wins/ nominations we disagree with. But, if that's all he meant, that's not what the O.P. asked for. The question was: What Was The Worst Performance To Win or Be Nominated For An Oscar. GoodMan answered, "Wayne over Hoffman." At first it seemed as if GoodMan was saying that if his choice didn't win, the actual winner was the worst ever. I see now that his reply was just off topic.
